National Law University, Orissa wins India Rounds for “Philip C Jessup International Moot Court Competition” at Amity University
Amity Law School (Delhi) in Association with Surana & Surana International Attorneys organized 58th edition of the India Rounds for “Philip C Jessup International Moot Court Competition” at Amity University Campus, Sector-125,Noida with Team from National Law University, Orissa winning the competition.
The best four teams of the competition including National Law University, Orissa;National Law Institute, Bhopal; Symbiosis Law School, Pune; NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad have made it to the White & Case International Rounds for Philip C Jessup International Moot Court Competition to be held at Washington D.C. in April 2017
Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world’s largest and most prestigious moot court competition, with participants from over 550 law schools across 87 countries. The competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between nations brought before the International Court of Justice, which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
This year’s moot problem addressed trans boundary aquifers, basic human rights including the rights to food and water and what happens when arguable violations of those rights generate refugee outflows.
Over 32 teams from Law Colleges and Institutes across India had participated in the competition and were adjudged by the sitting judges of the Hon'ble Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court along with eminent Academicians, Practicing Lawyers & Judicial Officers.
Welcoming the guests, Prof. (Dr.) Dilip Kumar Bandyopadhyay, Chairman, Amity Law Schools appreciated the hardwork of the participants and said that they have proved their mettle to become a successful International Lawyer. He advised the law students to remember the learning and maintaining the team spirit, efforts and contribution through the academic years for a successful legal carer ahead.
Sharing his views, Hon'ble Mr. Justice R.K. Agrawal, Supreme Court of India saidthat at present, several avenues are open to new entrants in legal profession and litigation is still a popular area of practice. He mentioned that skills of advocacy are nurtured through hard work and research over a period of time. He stressed that legal litigation has undergone a paradigm shift in India and the emergence of five year law colleges has resulted in redefining and refining the legal education system. Highlighting the importance of moot court competitions,Hon'ble Mr. Justice Agrawal said that Moot Court Competitions inculcate the finer skills of advocacy amongst the budding legal professionals and allow them to think analytically, putting forth propositions of law systematically.He remarked that most importantly, such competitions teach professionalism and ethics by giving opportunity to improve the legal writing, research and oral advocacy in a competitive environment. He advised the law students to keep themselves abreast with laws and understand the changes to be at the forefront of the profession.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Lalit Bhasin, President of the Society of Indian Law Firms and Managing Partner of Bhasin & Co. said that budding legal professionals need to inculcate brevity as an art in the legal profession. He suggested three important aspects for budding litigation lawyers including being precise in submissions, both oral and written; evolving in the field of drafting by preparing a synopsis of cases to give a brief overview about the submissions to judge and pleadings to be exhausted and detailed. Congratulating the participants, Mr. Bhasin said that participation in such a prestigious moot court competition is recognition of hardwork and assurance for becoming of successful lawyers.
During the competition, teams from National Law University, Orissa; National Law Institute, Bhopal; Symbiosis Law School, Pune; NALSAR University of Law,Hyderabad contested in semifinals. During the final rounds witnessed the knowledge of budding lawyers with National Law University, Orissa and Symbiosis Law School, Pune vied for the trophy.
Presenting superlative legal skills, Ms. Senhapriya Yanappa from Symbiosis Law School, Pune and Mr. Aditya Laddha from National Law University, Orissa bagged the award for “Best Speakers of the Finals” and The National Law Institute University, Bhopal won the trophy of “Best Memorial”. The team of Symbiosis Law School, Pune was the first Runner Up.
