Amity University signs an MoU with Special Olympics during Special Olympics Coach Training and Youth Activation programme at Amity
Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences (AIRS) in collaboration with Amity School of Physical Education & Sports Sciences (ASPESS) conducted Special Olympics Community Coach training programme for the students of Amity with the Trainers from “Special Olympics Bharat” at University Campus, Sector 125, Noida.
Special Olympics Coach Training and Youth Activation was organized to enhance the competencies of Teachers and Special teachers in present scenario of inclusive education. It trained not only to become master trainer and life skills for children with disabilities but also to enhance their abilities through sports.
During the occasion, Amity University signed an MoU with Special Olympics in presence of Mr. Simon Koh, Director Operations, Special Olympics Asia Pacific; Mr. Dipak Natali, Director- Organizational Development, Special Olympics Asia Pacific Regional office, Singapore; Mr. Victor Vaz, National Director Sports, Special Olympics Bharat; Prof. Amitav Mishra, Special Olympics Bharat; Dr. W.Selvamurthy, President, Amity School of Technology and Science Foundation; Dr.J. P. Singh, Chairman, Amity Foundation for Developmental Disabilities ; Prof. Kalpana Sharma, Dean Faculty of Education and Director, Amity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences and Dr. Jayanti Pujari, Director, Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Simon Koh said that training programmes for volunteers, teachers and caches is very important as it is one of the key ways to enrich the lives of athletes with a disability is to have quality volunteers and coaches at the grassroots level. He averred that the training programmes focus on what a coach can do, instead of what a coach knows. He expressed that the association with Amity will provide the support in knowledge and training skills that will lead to enhanced ability and attitudes of special athletes giving them best sporting experience.
Sharing his views, Prof. Amitav Mishra said that the signing of MoU with Amity is an excellent opportunity that can be incredibly rewarding mutually. He mentioned that the tools and encouragement they need for a positive experience,whether in competitive or community-related sports, is of great benefit to all of us involved with the movement. He opined that disability is not just physical or mental impairment that limit’s a persons activities but it is also the barriers in society which doesn’t give equal opportunities to a disabled person to grow. As a part of civil society it is our responsibility to facilitate, arrange resources and provide encouragement for an inclusive growth of society. Mr. Mishra highlighted that there are 200,000 special athletes registered in Special Olympics from Uttar Pradesh state, therefore,collaboration with Amity is momentous.
During the occasion, a friendly Unified Football Exhibition Match was also played wherein the specials athletes along with students of Amity University played an exciting match.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
