Verma- Executive President & Acting Secretary General, IndianSociety of International Law, New Delhi, Professor (Dr.) Manoj KumarSinha-Director, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi and Dr. Aditya Tomar- Dy.Director, Amity Law School, Centre II inaugurated theConference.

Welcomingthe distinguished gathering, Dr. Aditya Tomar- Dy. Director, Amity LawSchool, Centre II said that since its inception in 1945, the United Nations(UN) has become the foremost forum to address issues that transcend nationalboundaries. He stressed that the International Conference aims to provide aforum to analyze whether UN has been able to fulfill the expectations and goalsfor which it was formed and will provide an enriching and intellectualexperience to the budding lawyers.

Addressingthe gathering, Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyer- Former Cabinet Minister,Government of India said, “UN, when set up, provided a forum fornegotiations to take place both at the International level and bi-lateral levelfor freedom fighters all around the world to make their presence felt and worktowards the liberalization of their respective countries. Since then, thestructure of the UN has assisted in preventing a third World War and therefore,International peace and security have been safeguarded on the basis ofuniversally accepted principles.”

Hehighlighted how post independence India has been supporting the amicableresolution to the internal conflicts of countries such as Korean War, Partitionof Palestine and others. “ India has been contributing majorly to Peace keepingMissions of UN, although several other countries including Pakistan andBangladesh have come to the fore and have become, perhaps, more significant in this area than India whose involvement has diminished since 1960s, insteadof increasing. UN has been used by India more for bilateral purposes than formulti-lateral purposes.” asserted Mr. Aiyer

Sharinghis concern, the Former Cabinet Minister said that UN@ 70 is not as significantto world affairs as it was earlier; nevertheless it is the only forum to existfor every Sovereign country to become a member State. “The atmosphere inwhich the positive and peaceful initiatives were taken during the two decadesof the establishment of UN has started disappearing. They do have the provisionfor UN Security Council to be able to take decisions that would influenceInternational Peace and Security but because of the Cold War, it gets stymiedby Russian Veto, US Veto on most questions of Peace and Security.” remarked Mr.Mani Shankar Aiyer.

Professor(Dr.) S. K. Verma- Executive President & Acting Secretary General, IndianSociety of International Law, New Delhi, while sharingher views, stated that UN and League of Nations came into existence due to warsand since the inception of UN, there has been no major war, just conflictswhich have been prevented by UN from being flared up in full fledged wars. Shestressed that Human Resources are fundamental to ensure peace and developmentacross the globe and disputes are threat to International peace. Shestressed that India’s permanent membership in Security Council is a herculeantask since India does not enjoy good relations with all the 5 permanent membersof the Council. She congratulated Amity Law School, Centre II for choosingsuch a relevant topic for discussions and deliberations.

Sharinghis views, Professor (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha- Director, Indian LawInstitute, New Delhi said that it is important to study UN and how it worksin promoting International peace and security. The Preamble of UN Charterclearly states that UN aims to save succeeding generations from the scourge ofwar, reaffirming faith in human rights and providing amicable solutions to theCrisis.
