6th Amity International Model United Nations( AIMUN) by Amity Educational Resource Centre (AERC) and Amity International Schools commences

Amity Educational Resource Centre (AERC) together with Amity International Schools started 6th Amity International Model United Nations( AIMUN) Conference at Amity University Campus, Sector-125, Noida. The theme for this year’s AIMUN is “Thoughts Transform the World”.

Over 500 students from prestigious schools of 9 countries including USA,Japan, Thailand, Germany, France, Italy, Slovenia, Australia and India are participating in 9 Committees of three day AIMUN 2015- Organization of Islamic Cooperation, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development(UNCTAD), United Nations Security Council, National Security Council of USA,Indira Gandhi Cabinet (1984) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization to deliberate upon issues ranging from “Operation Blue Star”, “Threat of ISIS”,“Militarization of the Arctic”,“ Empowerment of Women through Education”,“Preservation of National Heritage”, “Status of Emerging Markets”, “Iran Hostage Crisis”, “Creation of Smaller States” and “Cooperative Federalism”

Chief Guest H.E. Mr. Jozef Drofenik, Ambassador of Slovenia, Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia,Dr. Amita Chauhan, Chairperson, Amity Group of Schools, Mr. Arnaud Gespalt-First Secretary, Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium; Mr. Istvan Darvasi,Ex-Ambassador of Hungary in Pakistan and Mr. Marcus Holknekt, First Secretary,Embassy of Sweden inaugurated AIMUN 2015.

Welcoming the distinguished gathering, Ms. Renu Singh- Principal, Amity International School, Noida highlighted the mission and vision of Dr. Ashok KChauhan-Founder President, Amity and Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson,Amity International Schools to nurture a brigade of socially responsible youth with global outlook. She called upon student participants to vow and strive tirelessly for peace and sustainable development of the globe, which is the underlying aim of conducting AIMUN.

Sharing her views, Dr.(Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools expressed her delight on the overwhelming participation of National and International students in AIMUN 2015 which she stressed, shows their interest in International affairs and diplomatic relations. She averred that youth is the leader and future of the word and it is imperative to imbibe the virtue of leadership amongst the youth. She stressed that thoughts are very important and they make a person what he/she is, thereby, encouraging students to channelize their thoughts in a constructive manner.

Chief Guest H.E. Mr. Jozef Drofenik, Ambassador of Slovenia, Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia appreciated Amity for its remarkable achievements. Commending the theme of the Conference,H. E. stressed that in an integrated world with digital economies and fading boundaries, competent workforce with multi-cultural knowledge and proficiency in foreign language is imperative. Stressing on the advantages of participating in MUNs, H.E. Mr. Jozef Drofenik said that MUNS are enriching life experiences,offering excellent opportunity to students to experience another culture. It inculcates strong understanding and acceptance of other countries and their global issues. He highlighted that MUNs encourage students to move out of their comfort zones and understand ethos and value system of other countries. He congratulated students and wished them luck for three day AIMUN 2015.

Delivering key note address, Mr. Arnaud Gespalt- First Secretary, Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium traced the background of First World War and Second World War which necessitated the formation of UN. He stressed that after the two WorldWars, people realized that knowledge without humanity is just knowledge and knowledge combined with humanity is wisdom. He remarked that UN was formed to tackle global issues, to save successive generations from the scourge of wars and ensure the progress and development of all 193 member countries. He stressed that new challenges have emerged in the present era which threaten the global peace such as terrorism, border wars, global warming etc. and suggested“renewed political will” to protect the global community. He applauded the concept of MUNs which apprise students with the working of various Councils of MUN and called upon the participants of AIMUN to think and act in a way which could make world a better place to live in.

Ms. Jyoti Arora-Director, Amity Educational Resource Centre, while sharing her views during the occasion, shared that 6th AIMUN is the biggest ever with humungous participation from India and abroad. Dwelling on the theme of AIMUN 2015, she stressed that mind is a great resource where thoughts originate and Intellect is the power of discrimination. She called upon students to use their intellect whenever they face a problem and motivated them to keep good company,read good books and scriptures to channelize ill thoughts in a constructive manner.

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to apprise students with Civics, current global and local events and multilateral Diplomacy. In MUN, the students research a country, take on the roles of Diplomats, recreate the work of the General Assembly Committees, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult and then develop solutions to global problems. 

Over 30 Indian Schools from Delhi/NCR, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Maharashtra and Gujarat are participating in AIMUN including Birla Vidya Niketan, Saket,British Co ed Patiala, Chinar Public School, Alwar, G D Goenka School, East Delhi, Modern Public School, Shalimar Bagh, Sachdeva Public School, Pitampura and others.

While debating on “Operation Blue Star” in Indira Gandhi Cabinet (1984), 15 students enacting the roles of bigwigs and politicians involved at that time touched upon various issues which were faced by ruling Party and supporting Agencies like IB. The brilliant ideas and impressive rhetoric by students acting as Shri PV Narsimha Rao, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Air Chief Marshal Dilbagh Singh reminded observers of the tense Cabinet meetings which Late Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi must have conducted in the background of tense situation faced by Punjab during 1984. The suggestions mooted during the proceedings included re-phrasing of ASFA Act, Negotiations with few Akali Leaders and members of Shiromani Gurudwara Parbhandhak Committee, Devising military solutions if the situation demands with minimum bloodshed and many more.

While sharing his experience, Abhineet Srivastava, a participant from Amity International School, Gurgaon Sector-46, donning the role of Shri PV Narsimha Rao in Indira Gandhi Cabinet (1984) stressed that today, the situation would have been very different, had the Cabinet decided to act differently at the time of Crisis in Punjab during 1984, which had far reaching repercussions. Abhineet,who voiced his ideas and suggestions vociferously in the Cabinet, wants tobecome a Politician and shared that platforms like AIMUN give him a glimpse of Indian Polity and global affairs, at the same time, giving him an opportunity to share his opinions and suggestions.
