Guest Lecture on “Multimodal Polymeric Nanoparticles for Treatment of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury” by by Dr. Tristan Clemons

A guest lecture on “Multimodal Polymeric Nanoparticles for Treatment of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury” wasorganized at Amity Campus, Sector 125, Noida. The lecture was delivered by Dr.Tristan Clemons, Research Associate, School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, The University of Western Australia.

Briefing about the guest, Dr. W Selvamurthy,President, Amity Science Technology and Innovation Foundation said that Dr.Tristan Clemons is a key member of the Bio Nano research team at University of Western Australia. He mentioned that along with research interests, Dr. Clemonsis heavily involved in student outreach and is an advocate for exciting students about the great opportunities a career in science can provide.Apprising the participants about Dr. Clemons key research areas, Dr.Selavamurthy said that he has wide expertise in areas of Multifunctional nano particle synthesis Therapeutic delivery, Disease treatment, Wound healing and Chemistry education research.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Tristan Clemons said that cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the developed world. He stressed that cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury is associated with a period of inhibited blood and oxygen flow (ischemia),followed by the return of blood and oxygen flow (reperfusion). He apprised that further damage can result during reperfusion as a result of elevated intracellular calcium levels and increased production of reactive oxygen species. Explaining the result of his research, Dr. Clemons pointed that delivery of the AID peptide with nanoparticles was effective at reducing I/R injury. Also, multimodal imaging capabilities of the nanoparticles were observed. Emphasizing on his future work, he said that his current and future research are based on ‘applications of nanoparticles for burns, wound healing and scar treatment’, ‘modified nanoparticle formulations’, ‘new ploymer’ and ‘block co-polymer formulation’.

During his visit, a special hockey match between the Team Faculty and Team Students was organized. Dr. Tristan Clemons was part of Team Faculty who won the match by 2-1 goals.
