“New method of knowledge creation is need of the hour.” avers Mr. C.B.Sharma, The National Institute of Open Schooling during National Seminar on ‘Changing Perspectives of Teacher Education for Preparing Skilled Teachers’ at Amity

To abreast the students about changing needs and requirements in teacher training, Amity Institute of Education (AIE) and Amity Institute of Behavioral and Allied Sciences Noida (AIBAS) organized a National Seminar on ‘Changing Perspectives of Teacher Education for Preparing Skilled Teachers’ at Amity campus, Sector 125 Noida.

 

The aim of the seminar was to inculcate professionalism to budding professionals so that they receive full five year higher education before taking up formal education.

 

The seminar was inaugurated by Mr.C.B.Sharma, Chairman, The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS); Ms. Heema Sharma, Principal, J.P .International   School, Greater Noida;Dr. Niradhar Dey, Faculty SOE, IGNOU; Dr. Ranjana Bhatia, Director, AmityInstitute of Education, Delhi and Dr. Alka Muddgal, Officiating Head, AIE &AIBAS.

 

Welcoming the guests, Dr. Ranjana Bhatia said that the teachers are the greatest assets of any education system. She apprised that the teacher education curriculum in India has been revised on many occasions to reflect and incorporate the cultural,linguistic and geographical diversities of the country and also to keep pace with the changing knowledge structure of the world. She expressed her hope that the seminar will deliberate upon the new challenges faced with new module of teaching education.

 

Sharing his views, Mr. C B Sharma said “Good Education is most important for the development of an individual, society and country as whole, which is recognized through quality of teachers and Teaching. So, the quality of teaching is dependent upon quality of teacher education. Hence, the theme is very pertinent to the growing concern over education system. He mentioned that Government of India has formed are view committee for assessment of teacher training and as a welcome step; the committee is open for suggestions from academicians, budding professionals and general public. He stressed that since the early time, Indian education system has been different from other countries. Indian historians has generated great text in form go Vedas and Upanishads hence people should not be followers and raise questions based on perception of west but must chart out their own path.He pointed that new method of knowledge creation is required. Dr. Sharma emphasized that the concern on new course system of teaching should not be over the increased course duration but focus must be on the content and quality it holds. He highlighted that various committees had submitted reports which are read mechanically rather than emphasizing on its practical implementation. Mr.Sharma outlined that in present time, teaching profession is not a priority of out nation and hence, there is a decline in respect for teachers as the profession is looked down upon. “Teachers are torch bearers of future society,henceforth it is necessary to give due respect to the profession. Teaching should be as one of the best pay jobs. If India requires good quality educators, so the government must invest in vocational training of budding professionals.” he opines.

 

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Alka Muddgal said “Founder President of Amity Group has a vision to contribute towards making India a knowledge superpower by 2020 and for this,quality of teacher training and teaching plays an important role.” She apprised that Amity focuses on nurturing students with inquisitive spirit, self discipline, reflective thinking accumulated with values and ethos. She stressed that there are various issues plaguing in teacher education system in India which needs to be addressed. These issues are poor standard with respect to resources for colleges of education, inadequate duration of a teacher programme, subjective evaluation programme, incompetent teacher educators resulting in deficiency of scholars and traditional curriculum and teaching methods amongst others.

 

During the seminar, various topics were deliberated upon including “Developing skilled teachers with global perspectives”; “Quality assurance in teacher education” by Ms. Heema Sharma, Principal J.P .International   School, Greater Noida and“Issues of inclusive education” and “Challenges in implementation of New Curriculum” by Dr. Niradhar Dey, Faculty SOE, IGNOU .

 

24 presentations were made by participants who came from various institutes/colleges including Shri Venkateshwara University; Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida; Guru Ram Das College of Education; Kamal Institute of Higher Education and Advance Technology (I P University), Amity Institute of Education and Pratham NGO amongst others, during the seminar.

 

The National Seminar was attended by more than 100 students, academicians and researchers across India.
