North Zone Inter University Tennis (Women) Tournament Inaugurates at Amity University

With the aim to promote sports in the youth, the “North Zone Inter University Tennis(Women) Tournament” by Association of Indian Universities started at Amity University. The five-day mega sports event was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh; Prof. Dr. Kalpana Sharma, Organizing Secretary, North Zone Inter University Tennis(Women) Tournament; Dr. Sanjeev Bansal, Director, Amity Business School and Col. Kesar Singh, Director- Sports, Amity University.

Welcoming the participants, Prof. Kalpana Sharma thanked AIU for entrusting the responsibility of hosting “North Zone Inter University Tennis Women Tournament” at Amity Campus. Presenting the summary of the tournament,she said that 21 teams from various Universities across North Zone are participating in the Tournament including Lucknow University, Chandigarh University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Aligarh Muslim University, University of Allahabad, Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science & Technology, Chaudhary Devilal University, M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Thapar University, Punjab University, Kurukshetra University, University of Delhi, Punjabi University, Chhatrapati Shahu JiMaharaj University, Maharshi Dayanand University, Punjab Technical University,Jamia Millia Islamia , Swami Vivekanand Subharti University and Amity University Uttar Pradesh.

Declaring the tournament open, Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla said that Indiais surging ahead in the field of sports and if India wants to be reckon as “SuperSports Power”, the sports players and sports events need to be supported and promoted big time.  She further addedthat the tournament would provide an opportunity to a number of budding Tennis Player who would display their stamina, skills and above all participation with fairness. Prof. Shukla motivated the participants to play with the true spirit of sportsmanship and also requested the audience to encourage the players wholeheartedly by cheering for them during the matches.

The inaugural match (Women’s Single) was played between Chandigarh University,Mohali and Lucknow University, wherein the Lucknow University won the match from 6-0, 6-0.

During the North Zone Inter University Tennis (Women) Tournament, all the matches will be conducted as per rules of AITA adopted by AIU, New Delhi. There will be five rounds before the final match which will be played on 10th January 2015.
