Structural Training Required for Budding Engineers for bridging Industry-Academia Gap, opines Industry Experts during TRANCE 2014 National Conference at Amity University

Amity School of Engineering and Technology organized one day National Conference on “Trends and Recent Advances in Civil Engineering” at Amity Campus, Sector 125, Noida.

The provided a platform for academicians, researchers, industry experts and budding engineers to share experiences and chalk out solution to problems in different areas of civil engineering. The conference received more than 30 research papers across the nation.

The Conference was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. S P S Bakshi, Chairman & Managing Director Engineers Project India Ltd.,President IBC; Mr. Arvind Arora, Indian Defense Service of Engineers (IDCE),Director General, Military Engineering Services, Ministry of defense, Army Head Quarters, E-inC’s Branch; Prof. (Dr.) D. Goldar, Former Director, Delhi College of Engineering; Mr. K B Rajoria, Advisor, Indian Building Congress ( IBC),Former E-in-C, PWD; Prof.(Dr.) Ravi Praksah, Dean FE&T, Director Amity School of Engineering and Technology; Ms. Madhuri Kumari, Acting Head,Department of Civil Engineering, Amity School of Engineering & Technologyand Prof. J Bhattacharjee, Advisor, Civil Engineering, Amity School of Engineering & Technology.

Welcoming the guests, Ms. Madhuri Kumari said that the force behind physical aspects of society such as buildings, the roads etc. is artificial excellence that felicitates convenient living and the mastermind behind the creations is Civil Engineers. She further added that Civil Engineering is undergoing rapid changes driven by Globalization such as environmental safety and concerns, population demands, IT revolution and various scientific advances in the fields of material science, Nano Technology, Biotechnology and many more. Ms. Kumari emphasized that such changes necessitates the future engineers to keep themselves abreastwith contemporary trends in the industry.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Prakash said that Civil Engineering is the first branch of engineering which was initially known as Military Engineering.  Referring the vision of PM Narendra Modi of developing smart cities, Dr. Prakash stressed that budding civil engineers have great role to play in the development of nation.    He further added that today’s engineers should have knowledge about smart materials in civil structures and their usage since smart materials are easy to use and have greater durability. He urged the budding engineers to focus on developing green buildings which are environment friendly. He expressed his hope that the conference would bring out the emerging demands in industry and provide a platform to aspiring engineers to gain knowledge from the experts of the sector.

Sharing his thoughts on the developments in the field of Civil Engineering, Mr. Arvind Arora said that the new government has focused on rapid economic growth and has underlined twelve challenges for 5 years plan “Securing the energy future of India; faster development of structures including transport, manufacturing and technological; enhancing technological skills; improved access to quality education and development of improved agricultural and irrigation capacity”- all these challenges would provide immense opportunities to Civil Engineering.  He further added that sustainability is another strategic challenge which requires massive investments in the projects and programs to achieve rapid economic growth.Dr. Arora mentioned that necessity for engineering community is to identify the issues which may come up in the way of meeting accelerated economic growth andplan development strategies.

Stressing on importance of Engineering Education, Prof.(Dr.) D. Goldmar said that Civil Engineering has greatly contributed to the growth of civilization. He further added that engineering education must evolve to keep pace with mighty changes that occur in business, industry and society. He urged the engineers to develop and attribute knowledge beyond traditional constraints of classrooms. “Engineering education must be designed to accommodate current trends and future needs which will help future engineers to gain comprehensive understanding of the industry”, he opined.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. K B Rajoria said that there is an interface between industry and academia and structural training must be provided to students to bridge the gap. He mentioned that we must appreciate the contributions made by engineers for the human welfare.

During the conference, TRACE-2014 E-proceedings were released which included the research papers which were presented by the researchers and scholars across the nation.

The inauguration was followed by first plenary session chaired by Dr. D Goldar discussed on the topic “Advances in Construction Technology”. During the conference, deliberations were made on various topics including ‘Computer Applications in Civil Engineering’ and ‘Sustainable Construction’.

More than 250 students, researchers, scholars, academicians and industry experts participated in the discussion.
