Amity kindles scientific temper amongst the youth during “International Olympiad” and “National Mathematics Olympiad Workshop
The week long “3rd Amity International Olympiad for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology” and “16th Amity National Mathematics Olympiad Workshop” organized by Amity Institute of Competitive Examination (AICE) and Amity Centre for Science Olympiads (ACSO) from May 19- 24, 2014 concluded today at Amity Campus, Sector-125, Noida.
Amity International Olympiad and Amity National Mathematics Olympiad Workshop, are first ever of their kind in India, which aim to kindle scientific spirit and a passion for innovation amongst the youth of the country, while grooming them for National and International Olympiads.
Over 150 students of classes VI to XII from schools across Delhi / NCR participated in National Mathematics Olympiad Workshop and over 140 students from the schools located in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan along with over 70 Indian students in the International Olympiad.
Prof. Dr. K. Kanan, Dean, Sastra University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu and Prof. Dr. R. Srikanth, Associate Dean, Sastra University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, renowned scholars in the field of Mathematics, trained the participants of the Workshop along with a group of exceptionally talented scholars roped in from various Institutions known for their excellence and repute including famous Scientist, Dr. S. V. Eswaran from St. Stephen’s College.

Welcoming the august gathering, Ms. Meenakshi Rawal-Director, Amity Institute of Competitive Examination (AICE) presented a brief summary of the week long Workshop and Olympiad. She shared that International Olympiad was conducted in four subjects- Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which witnessed humungous participation from National and International students. She further added that Mathematics Olympiad Workshop intended to make Mathematics fun to learn subject for students through innovative ways which included learning formula with tabla.
His Excellency Daulat Kuanyshev, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to India expressed his special gratitude to Amity for the effort they make in organizing International Olympiad and national Olympiad workshop. He stressed that one of the major problems faced by countries across the globe is to provide safe and secure future to the generations coming ahead and International Olympiads are one of the medium through which children are guided onto the right path since they provide an opportunity to the students from different countries to come together, interact and learn from each other in a friendly, harmonious and conducive atmosphere.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Manas K. Mandal- Distinguished Scientist and Director General- Life Sciences, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said that children are the intellectual capital of any country and no child in the world is without a talent. He stressed that talent needs to be re-defined across the world since the word “talent” is not synonymous with being “intellectual, innovative, brilliant or creative”. A child can find his talent in any field be it Mathematics, Science or any extra curricular field. He thanked Amity for conducting International Olympiad in four subjects since innovations are possible in any subject. Motivating the participants, he stressed that awards and recognition are important but more important is participation, in the absence of which one could become obsolete.
Expressing her gratitude to the resource persons of the Olympiad and Workshop who mentored the students, Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools said that her dream to hold such prestigious events has been fulfilled due to the constant support extended by the talented resource persons. She congratulated all the participants for their performance and encouraged them to aim higher in their lives irrespective of the number of hurdles that they might face en-route. She shared various scientific initiatives taken by Amity Institute of Competitive Examination to foster scientific temper amongst the students. She further highlighted the patents filed by the students of Amity International schools which include “Herbal Hand Sanitizer”, “Herbal shampoo for pets” and “Magnetic Field Development for accelerating the plant growth”.
Sharing his views, Prof. K Ramachandran- Director, Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), Defence Research and Development Organisation, (DRDO) stressed that the growth of the country is in the hands of youth and considering the great potential of the youth in Asian countries, it is very important to provide plethora of right opportunities to the youth through which they could identify and bring out their talents. He averred that International Olympiad conducted by Amity gave students an opportunity to unlock their capabilities and identify their future calling. He commended Amity for giving numerous such platforms to the students globally and preparing them to achieve laurels in future.
Sharing his experience, Zara Suif -a participant of “3rd Amity International Olympiad” from Kazakhstan expressed his joy on participation in the Olympiad. He appreciated the hospitality extended by team Amity, infrastructure, course structure and the learned jury members. He stated that the International Olympiad provided him an opportunity to exchanges notes with students of other countries and was instrumental in cross-cultural exchanges. He even shared his desire to participate in all Amity International Olympiads in future.
Another participant of “National Mathematics Olympiad Workshop”, Aneesh Sairam- from Class VIII, DPS R K Puram expressed his gratitude to Amity for organizing the Workshop which instilled a lot of confidence in him and the scary and difficult problems were made easy to crack by “Mathe-magians”. He appreciated hostel facilities and recreational activities which made the Workshop all the more enjoyable and memorable for him.
Over 120 Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were awarded along with “Special Mention Awards” to the participants of International Olympiad who performed exceptionally well during the Olympiad.

During the ceremony, the winners of GLOBAL TALENT SEARCH EXAMINATION 2013, conducted by Amity Institute for Competitive Examinations every year in November, were felicitated with Cash Prizes and Certificates. This time, over 25, 000 students appeared for GTSE from various schools across India.
Global Talent Search Examination was conceptualized in 2006 to kindle scientific temperament in students from Class I- XII who shall represent the country eventually in National and International competitions.
