Amity University organizes “Amity International Model United Nations 2012 (AMIMUN)

Amity University organized a three day International Conference “Amity International Model United Nations 2012 (AMIMUN )” from March 14-16, 2012 at Amity University, Sector-125, NOIDA with a strong conviction that young brigade can play a pro active part towards a “better world”.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Sustainable Development - In Harmony with Nature” which emphasizes upon the importance of sustainable development in today’s world in order to protect the future of humanity.

Over 30 colleges participated in AMIMUN including Hans Raj College, Delhi University, Shri Ram College Of Commerce, Delhi, Indian School of Business & Finance, New Delhi, JSS Academy of Technical Education, Noida, Rajiv Gandhi National University Of Law, Patiala, Punjab, Department of Laws, Panjab University Chandigarh, Thapar University, BITS Pilani, Hidayatullah National Law University, National Law University, Odissa, ILS Law College, Pune, Christ University, Bangalore and others.

During the three days, students assumed the roles of Diplomats representing various member-states of the UN and simulate various committees, agencies, specific organs, and programmes of the United Nations system. Through this simulated exercise of debate, discussion and deliberations of the UN, students endeavor to learn about matters of international importance, the unique challenges nations face, and the various factors that influence political outcomes.

Welcoming the august gathering and sharing her concern over the over-exploitation of resources affecting sustainable development, Dr. B Shukla- Pro Vice Chancellor, Amity University said that whatever the mankind is enjoying has come from nature and even the source of artificially manufactured products is nature only. Mankind has been over exploiting the nature for its selfish ends and if this continues, the nature will not forgive us. She remarked that the resources are limited and there is a global competition for those limited resources. Dr. Shukla stressed that the clarion call is the judicious use of resources and switching over to alternate sources of energy, which would lead to sustainable development.

Sharing his views on the theme of the Conference, the Chief Guest Mr. Mathew Hammill- Economic Affairs Officer, ESCAP SRO-SSWA said that sustainable development has become a social, economic and environmental imperative and to attain sustainable development the integration of developing countries into the world economy is essential. Addressing students, he further, said that during the Conference they will be exposed to always fascinating and sometimes frustrating proceedings of UN and it would be a challenging task for them to reach consensus on matters affecting the world economy. He advised the students to discuss,debate and deliberate their best during the sessions and come up with feasible solutions leading to sustainable development.

Expressing her views during the occasion, Dr. Malathi Subramanian-Director, Student Affairs, Amity School of Engineering and Technology stressed that sustainable development should have well being of the humanity at its core and it should be linked to human security.

Seven councils including the Security Council (UNSC), the General Assembly-II (ECOFIN), the General Assembly-III (SOCHUM), the Human Rights Council (HRC), the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), G-20 and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) were simulated in AMIMUN wherein the students discussed various agendas in the context of sustainable development such as:
- Economic growth with sustainable development.
- Protection of the biodiversity to achieve sustainable growth.
- Addressing the rights of people marginalized and/or displaced by skewed development policies
- Impact of armed conflicts on sustainable development
