Amity Institute of Telecom Technology & Management organises Panel Discussion on Animal Rights during Human Values Quarter

To commemorate Human Values Quarter,  Amity Institute of Telecom Technology & Management organized screening of ‘ Plastic Cow’ a documentary by Kunal Vohra followed by a  panel discussion on animal rights and how usage of plastic bags are detrimental to  animal health.  

The panel saw eminent Animal Welfare Activist – Ms. Rukmini Sekhar , Supreme Court Petitioner and  Writer– Ms. Ambika Shukla and the film maker – Mr. Kunal Vohra of Altria Films as participants along with Dr. Madhur Hans and Ms. Helen Mehtani , both working towards animal rights.  

Ms. Ambika Shukla who is widely considered one of Asia's leading advocates to protect animals and wildlife. Educated in the United States, she has worked with numerous global organizations such as the World Wildlife Federation in drawing attention to the subject of cruelty to animals. She runs a nonprofit, nonpartisan organisation called People for Animals, which operates animal shelters in virtually all of India's 29 states. Ms Shukla is a popular speaker on the lecture circuit in India, South-east Asia, Europe and the United States. Ms. Rukmini Sekhar who has been involved in the social justice sector for over 30 years. She has also been editor and publisher for social change issues.  Now she works almost full time for the rights of animals and campaigns relentlessly for their protection through activism and articles in newspapers. 

The Plastic Cow team has moved the Supreme Court of India via a PIL on animal rights that seeks to ban plastics, remove the interface between stray animals and garbage and make state governments, municipalities and the Animal Welfare Board of India accountable for this problem. The campaign seeks to create Plastic Cow chapters all over India and to sensitize citizens to this problem which is not so visible, but practices extreme cruelty on animals. Rukmini Sekhar has recieved the Karamveer Puraskar for her work towards the rights of animals.

Mr. Kunal Vohra,  is an independent filmmaker and his experience in the field of film and television production includes documentaries, social awareness television spots, corporate and training films, commercials and music videos. Has also written a book about cricket, Great Cricketers of the World, which was commissioned and published by Goodwill Publishing in 2006. Some films made in last few years:- Breathe, Television, Snow Globe, OverwritingSix Seconds abt Tbacco, Traffic safety,consumer awareness etc and many many more with celebrities like Dia Mirza, Gul panag, Rohit Bal, sonam kapoor etc.

The 30 min documentary was extremely touching and sensitively made with documented medical evidences as to how plastic bags are harmful for animals , cow in particular , which is revered and held in high esteem in India. The stray cows in search of food in garbage dumps swallow plastic bags with food as they are unable to open the bags and eventually suffer painful death. The film educated the students on how various animal welfare centres took care of stray cows and gave them back a healthy life after medical treatment. The film  was followed by panel discussion with an objective to sensitize the students and induce them realize the ill effects of plastic bags and its heinous effect on animals.

The event was very well received by students and the panel was swamped with numerous questions which the panel most patiently answered and urged the students to participate in animal welfare activities.
