Sharing important statistics about Cervical Cancer, Dr. Gupta revealed that in India, over 200 women die of Cervical Cancer every day, 8 women in every hour and 1 woman in every 7 minutes. He stressed that Cervix Cancer does not happen overnight. It takes at least 5 years for Pre- Cancer cell to develop into Cancer Cell and then within 5 months or so basement membrane breaks causing HPV virus to spread, leading to Cancer Cervix. Pre- cancer cell can be diagnosed with the help of “PAP Smear Test” and thereby, treated as per stage of the cancer, its size and patient’s age and general health.
Dr. Gupta shared that there are two kinds of vaccinations that are available in India to avoid Cervix Cancer- “Double Power” and “Four Power”, which ideally should be administered in three shots between the age group of 10- 25 years. The three shots of the vaccination costs around Rs. 9, 000 and has no side effect. Although the vaccination is provided free of cost in many foreign countries including China but India Government is yet to mull over the feasibility to provide free of cost Cervix Cancer vaccinations to women in the country.
During a Panel discussion on “Encouraging Prevention and Early Intervention of Breast and Cervix Cancer”, Dr. Suversha Khanna stressed upon the need to realize that every body is susceptible to Cancer and it can happen to anybody and everybody, calling upon the distinguished gathering to make health checks a regular part of their routine.
Dr. Naik briefed the gathering about the various facilities available at Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Dharamshila Hospital and highlighted the importance of Self examination especially for Breast Cancer and Mouth Cancer.
Dr. (Mrs.) Kamlesh Mishra stressed the need of getting “PAP Smear” test done after 3 years of becoming sexually active and then after every year. She shared that the vaccination against Cancer Cervix presents just 70% against the Cervical Cancer but still one should go for the vaccination since prevention is better than cure.
