Budding lawyers from Amity Legal Aid Society, Amity Law School, Noida visit Dasna Jail
The students of Amity Legal Aid Society visited Dasna District Jail, within their objective to provide legal Aid to the underprivileged and needy. The purpose of the visit was to see and learn the practical functioning of judiciary.
The group consisted of 10 students from different semesters on voluntary basis. They were accompanied by two faculty members Ms. Ritu Singh and Ms. Sheetal Singh.
Dasna Jail is located on NH 24 and houses around 4260 inmates, all convicts and under-trials. The visit was undertaken after due research and deliberation. The objective of the visit was to study the functioning of the jail, conditions of the inmates and to understand their problems and to provide possible legal service to the inmates.
The inmates of Adolescent Cell (aged 18-21 years) highlighted few common legal problems:
1. Delay of more than a month in appearance before the court.
2. Few inmates did not have their parents informed about them being in jail.
3. Some inmates were not able to afford the bail bond even for petty offences and have to remain in jail.
4. Some of the out station inmates were not able to provide two guarantors to give their bail.
During the visit, the students and faculty members came across certain legal issues such as money laundering , lottery scam, dowry death and fraud.
Amity Legal Aid Committee proposes to work in tandem with their Legal Cell the medium of communication with the outside world, thus facilitating legal help and speedy justice.
The Superintendent of Jail expressed his desire to establish a long term relation with Amity Legal Aid Committee. He agreed to the visit of Amity Law School students twice in a month so that the budding lawyers can work for the inmates. He has also invited the students from Amity Legal Aid Committee to witness Lok Adalats that are organised inside the jail.
