Amity Competition on Law Reforms on the theme “Anti Terror Laws” begins at Amity University

To provide budding lawyers an experience of clinical legal education which prepares them to face actual courtroom, Amity Law School, Noida started its three day “Amity Competition on Law Reforms” from January 30, 2013 – February 1, 2013 at Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Sector- 125, Noida.  The theme of this year’s competition is “Anti Terror Laws”

 

The competition was inaugurated by Mr. Colvin Gonsalves, Sr. Advocate, Maj. Gen. Dipankar Banerjee - Founder Institute of Peace & Conflict Studies, Maj. Gen Nilendra Kumar, Director – Amity Law School Noida.

 

Welcoming the august gathering, Maj. Gen. Nilendra Kumar, Director, Amity Law School, Noida said that Anti Terror Laws are the talk of the day and are much needed in Indian context.  Many states of our country like Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland etc are suffering from terrorism.  Most of the laws are old and need to be revised. Maj Gen.Kumar shared that the competition on law reforms will inculcate in students an expertise to frame laws and also to undertake suitable drafting capabilities.  Their knowledge of laws and constitution will be tested by bench of three or more judges invited to assess them.

 

Inaugurating the Competition on Law Reforms, Maj. Gen. Dipankar Banerjee - Founder Institute of Peace & Conflict Studies said that India is a democracy with participatory governance and therefore laws of country must promote equitable treatment for all, they should be implemented firmly and respected by all. While sharing his views on the importance of Anti Terror Laws, Maj. Gen. Banerjee said that India is facing multifarious challenges in the management of its internal security. There is an upsurge of terrorist activities, intensification of cross border terrorist activities and insurgent groups in different parts of the country. Terrorism has now acquired global dimensions and has become the challenge for the whole world. Maj. Gen. Banerjee said that violence is generated from lots of sources and directed towards general public. Violence sometimes has to be curbed by counter violence for ensuring security of citizens of India and maintaining peace, but it should not be counter productive.

 

Mr. Colvin Gonsalves, Sr. Advocate – Supreme Court of India while addressing the budding lawyers said that we have harsher laws and harsher punishment but still situation of internal peace in our country is becoming worse. We have set culture, tradition and spirituality. But spirituality and virtues are becoming negligible in human beings. Mr. Gonsalves said that time is changing so rapidly that the period which you are going through is entirely different from the one your parents have witnessed. Delhi is the capital of country having Central Government, State Government and all military heads, still one does not feel secure in Delhi. It is the law that brings the social order. Mr. Gonsalves advised students to compete with a sportsman spirit and find out new ideas as to how Anti Terror Laws can be fully implemented in this country.

 

Six leading law schools are participating in the competition including NLU, Orrisa; ILS, Pune and Amity Law School, Lucknow. The students will be adjudged by leading law professionals and academicians including Mr. Shashank Bajpai- Advocate Central Govt. Counsel, Supreme Court, Dr. Jeet Singh Mann- Asst. Prof. of Law, National Law University, Dwarka, Ms. Sweety Manchandani - Senior Standing Counsel, High Court, Delhi and others
