Dr. Pankaj Jalote Director IIIT, Delhi delivers lecture on "RESEARCH & RESEARCH CAREERS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE" at Amity University
Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Amity School of Engineering & Technology organized an Expert Lecture Session by eminent professor Dr. Pankaj Jalote Director IIIT, Delhi on 17 January 2013 at Amity University, Noida. The topic of the lecture was “RESEARCH & RESEARCH CAREERS IN COMPUTER SCIENCE” which benefitted 350 students and 70 faculty members.
The welcome address was given by Dr. K. M. Soni, Dy. Director & Head, Amity School of Engineering and Technology, AUUP.
The lecture was an insight to a question that immediately resonates with & is recognizable to millions of engineers today, as they struggle to make sense of their choices & to sift the necessary from the indulgent-the question of what is research all about & whether or not they shall pursue a career in same.
It was emphasized that the ultimate task of an engineer is to design new products via latest technology and must have the ability to improve upon the obsolete technologies by applying his knowledge creatively.
So, the question that emerges is - From where did the tools & technologies used by engineers come? That is the realm of ‘Research’. A hierarchy can be found to exist from users which are huge in numbers, to engineers who develop the products used & ultimately narrows down to a handful of researchers in the hierarchical order.
The lecture further conceptualized that research begins with definition of problem statement followed by exploring solutions in a rigorous manner. The major traits of a researcher include ability to read, analyze & synthesize along with dexterity to work hard over elongated hours. Unlike engineering which is cost driven & has predictive outcomes & schedules, this element is missing from research which is more like discovering an un-traversed path. Curiosity & creativity is of utmost importance bundled with a knack to take risks.
Talking about the significance of research, Dr. Pankaj Jalote highlighted that today most companies have R&D facilities apart from software centers, where demand for researchers has increased significantly over the last few decades.
The lecture concluded with an invigorating Q&A session, in which the curious young fellows put forth their queries.
The vote of thanks was extended by Dr. Abhay Bansal, HOD (CSE).
