First ever “F1 in Schools™ Technology Challenge” of India starts in Amity University
“F1 in Schools™ Technology Challenge” world’s largest three day educational initiative started at Amity University, Sector-125, Noida with much excitement and fanfare. This is the first regional competition of the multi layered F1 in School Challenge, launched in the capital in December,2012
Over 88 teams registered with F1 in Schools from 18 schools of Delhi/ NCR will be competing in the Challenge over a course of three days under two different categories Juniors and Intermediate. The participating schools include Salwan Public Schhool, Gurgaon, Sanskriti School, Chanakyapuri, British School, New Delhi, DPS Gurgaon, DPS R K Puram, BBPS Gangaram, Amity International School, Noida, Amity International School, Gurgaon, Sector- 46 and amongst others.
The competition will provide participants aclarity on academic concepts, good experience and skill in design, resourcing, marketing, planning and organizing, manufacturing, quality control, procurement, sales and presentation.
The participants have conceptualized, designed and created miniature F 1 Cars with the requisite guidance and assistance of Formula 1 in Schools within 2-3 months. The main objective of Formula 1 in Schools is to create a fun and an exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in Engineering, Formula One™, Science, Marketing and Technology.
Inaugurating the Challenge and motivating the participating teams, Padamshree Ms. Shovana Narayan -the famous Kathak Dancer said that every design and project is unique in its own way which brings out the creativity of team members. All the participants have great will power and out of the box creativity, which is reflected in their projects. “ The designing of F1 Cars is a multi-disciplinary task involving the principles of Statistics, Mathematics, Designing and Management and the best team which definitely stand out from others”, remarked Ms. Narayan. She called upon the participants to find their own path, identify their creativity and nurture it beautifully and further assured them that all of them succeed in their respective careers leaving behind their footprints to be followed by others.
About the foray of F1 in Schools™, Mr. Aaditya Tangri, Indian In-Country Coordinator for F1 in Schools says “The challenge will benefit all the stakeholders in the society. Students will benefit academically and acquire soft skills necessary to succeed professionally. The challenge will set them apart while applying for higher studies. The main objective is to make them better, smarter and productive job candidates. Parents and Organizations will be pleased to know that F1 in Schools is teaching children to be responsible and proactive citizens of the future.” He expressed his hope thatF1 in Schools™ participants will contribute to the Indian economy through product, process or industry innovation once they join the workforce.
DPS, R K Puram- one of the youngest participating team in the Intermediate Category seemed absolute upbeat and gung- ho about their miniature F1 Car which they have named as “THE DART”. Talking about the difficulties faced by the team at various stages, Shreya Kapoor- a class X student who channelized the sponsorships for their team “ASSASSINS SQUAD” expressed that every task involves challenges and the wiser lot benefit from the learning of those challenges. She stated that since “F1 in Schools™ Technology Challenge” is taking place in India for the first time so they really had a tough time seeking sponsorships for the project and rued the fact that there is a dearth of sponsorships for sports and sporting events in the country. Jemima Khan- Designer and Co- Manufacturing Engineer (as designated in the team “ASSASSINS SQUAD”) shared that the entire journey of designing F1 Car was very enriching and informative. It gave them an opportunity to apply the theory they learn in the classroom to real life, teaching them teamwork, leadership and working in strict time bound deadlines. It has made them realize the real calling of their lives and what they want to pursue further. The other team members include Karmanya Singh- designated as Team Manager, Anish Lall- designated as Resource Manager and Avichal Gupta- designated as Co- Manufacturing Engineer in the team
Another participating team from Amity International School, Noida represented by “FTN Racers” has designed a light weight Formula 1 Car – “FUSION”, weighing 56 gms. Sidhant Raghuvanshi- a student of Class XI and a huge F 1 fan (designated as Team Manager in “FTN Racers”) shared that he loves to experiment with different applications of Physics and the Challenge has really benefitted them in knowing what goes behind the giant F1 cars, thereby giving them rich exposure to F1 at school level. Kunal Govil- a Class XII student designated as “Design Engineer” in the team narrated the difficulties faced by the team in designing “FUSION”, how the initial two designs failed on the feasibility front and how the final design was created within two hours with a width - 65 mm, length - 196 mm and total height - 4cm/40mm. The other team members included Govindan Govindarajan- Designated Graphic Designer of the team, Shikhar Tyagi responsible for manufacturing of the Car and Prakhar Tyagi- Designated as Resource Manager of the team.
The teams will be primarily judged on their F1 Car Design, F1 Pit and Verbal Presentation by the eminent judges which comprise of industry experts including Mr. Senthil- Team Manager of Mr. Narain Karthikeyan- the first Formula One motor racing driver of India and faculty members from Amity University
Regional winners would compete in finals during September 2013 and selected three teams would represent India in the World Finals. Winners of the Global finals will be acknowledged with the Bernie Ecclestone World Championship Trophy and a scholarship at City University, London. Student winners will also get the golden opportunity to explore internships, summer jobs or employment opportunities at Formula One. Female participants would be eligible for the FIA women in motorsport prize, awarded every year to an outstanding team with female team member and individual female participant.
