Students of AIPS, Noida organises Seminar: “Ego and Complexes”

Students of Psychology Debate Society, Amity Institute of Psychology and Allied Sciences, Noida conducted its foundational seminar on the topic, “Better understanding of Ego and Complexes in terms of Societal and Psychological Perspective” on September 13, 2012 at A-Block Seminar Hall, Amity University, Noida.

The Seminar was inaugurated under the meticulous guidance of Prof. (Dr) Abha Singh, Director, Amity Institute of Psychology and Allied Sciences with an introductory speech by her detailing about the Psychology Debate Society of AIPS. Students of BA (H) Applied Psychology participated in the seminar and shared their research results on the understanding of Ego and Complexes from the Societal and the Psychological outlook.

The students through their presentations shared that overall view of the society converges to a common understanding of Ego as superiority complex, negative attitude, being proud and boastful, false pride, arrogance, self respect, self obsession. As language trickles down through the generations, multiple interpretations of the same word are of common incidence. Similarly, results of survey done by the participants also threw a light on Ego and its correlation with both superiority and inferiority complex. Ego in common usage is also considered as superiority complex and a feeling of self with others being inferior to them.

The survey also highlighted that common people are not aware of the Psychological explanation of the term “Ego”. The psychological perspective of ego is explicitly explained by Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytical theory. This school of thought explains Ego as a building block of personality and is one amongst three, Id (pleasure seeker), Ego(the Executor, Mediator and the principle of reality) and Super Ego(Ethical and Moral guardian). The ego separates out what is real to organize our thoughts and make sense of them and the world around us. It maintains balance between primitive drives, reality and ethics and is concerned with individual’s safety and identity.

AIPS, Amity University, Noida students through above presentation sensitized their own selves and their peers with the notion about Ego and complex as a positive and healthy entity from the Psychoanalytical perspective by Sigmund Freud. These insights further took this learning to the society for eliminating the misconception about Ego and reduce the stigma associated with the ego and complex– this way we all may enhance our quality of life by adopting the healthy aspects of ego and by getting rid off of the related complexes.

All the students were given the certificate of participation and winner was adorned with the Certificate of Appreciation along with a prize. The seminar was summed up by Dr. Ben Wright and Concluding remarks were presented by Prof. (Dr.) Abha Singh and she also shared the topic for the next debate i.e. “Psychotherapy vs Spirituality: An Approach to Happy, Healthy and Holistic Living”.
