Amity Students volunteer for Common Wealth Games 2010

It was a wish come true for all the students of Amity, when Ms. Manjushree Roy- Head, Volunteers Programme and Training of the Organizing Committee, CWG visited Amity University to select 150 Sports Specific, Hospitality Specific and Security Specific Volunteers for TEST GAMES preceding Common Wealth Games. Amity will provide over 500 volunteers for the upcoming Common Wealth Games 2010. She, during her interaction with the students, outlined the various volunteering options available for students during the Common Wealth Games 2010 and responded to the queries and cleared the doubts of the students regarding the Volunteering programme.

Welcoming Ms. Manjushree Roy, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity said that it’s a very proud moment for all Amitians who are given the golden opportunity to volunteer during the Common Wealth Games. He citied that Common Wealth Games is a mega event wherein over 71 countries and 8, 000 athletes will be participating facilitating cross cultural experiences for all concerned. The success of the event will depend largely upon the volunteers, how they conduct themselves and how they tackle the difficult situations. He assured that all those who will volunteer for the Common Wealth Games will make unparallel careers in their life ahead.

Providing vital information regarding the volunteering programmes during the Common Wealth Games, Ms. Manjushree Roy said, “the task of organizing Common Wealth Games is monumental. Various institutions like Amity University, NCC, NSS, and Ministry of Tourism have joined hands with the organizing committee of Common Wealth Games provide volunteers for Common Wealth Games, thereby supporting the organizing committee and building confidence in it for successfully holding Common Wealth Games in India. Volunteering Programme is the largest and biggest value programme of Organising Committee which aims to deliver the best execution of Common Wealth Games. There are 23 venues and over 40 training venues with 36 functional areas including Hospitality, Security and Sports in Common Wealth Games wherein the volunteers can contribute as per their attitude and skils along with the paid staff. There will be four kinds of training that will be imparted to volunteers once they clear all the selection rounds namely General Training, Role Specific Training, Venue Specific Training and Leadership Training. It is very important for the volunteers to attend the training, it is only after that their reports regarding the performance during the trainings is found satisfactory, students will be confirmed as volunteers” She clarified that even a management student can go for Sports Specific Volunteering or Security Specific Volunteering, all one need is the basic knowledge regarding the chosen volunteering area and the right skils needed to work in that particular area.”

Motivating the students to give their best during the Common Wealth Games as volunteers, she said, “India is being looked at by the world over. Every volunteer is not just contributing to Organizing Committee but to India. This moment is ours. Every Indian has to own up the games, all those hands coming together will make Common Wealth Games a real success. We are hosting Common Wealth Games because we are capable of doing it and not just for the sake of hosting them.”

Taking about what a volunteer gets in return and how he can make a difference, she averred, “volunteers are not paid but they are taken care of. They are given uniform, meals, accreditation card, medical insurance etc. The call of the country is to develop an army of selfless people who do not have any vested interest. Volunteers are very important for the success of the Common Wealth Games. They are the face of the Games and cultural ambassadors of this nation, they are the interface between the event and the global audience, they are symbol of selfless service and patriotism. The games will help the volunteers to develop personal skils which would help in their personality development, paving a path for a better future”

She proudly revealed that out of over 1, 600 employees in the Organizing Committee of the Common Wealth Games, 75-80 are from Amity. Over 20 interviewers are selected from Amity and more will be taken up in the near future. A total of 30,000 volunteers need to be trained.

An elaborate selection process followed Ms. Manjushree Roy’s interaction wherein the students were interviewed by the interviewers chosen by the Organising Committee in three different venues based upon three different volunteering areas, students were expected to opt for. Hundreds of students filled up the forms and were interviewed for hours. After strenuous procedure and formalities, 150 students were short listed for being volunteers during the TEST GAMES preceding the Common Wealth Games. Amity will provide over 500 volunteers in the near future for upcoming Common Wealth Games.
