Amity Institute of Information Technology (AIIT) kick started its two day technical cum cultural Fest “CYBUS X” on the theme “Real Time Web for Bottom Billion” at Amity Campus, Sector-125, Noida.

Welcoming the august gathering and sharing his views on the aptness of the theme of “ “CYBUS X”, Prof. HSP Singh- Director, AIIT said that 70% of the human resources are not properly connected due to various reasons. The ability to get information from masses on one part of the planet to the masses somewhere else has never been greater. The call of the hour is to provide real time web solutions in the rural areas thereby bridging the gap between rural areas and urban areas.

Speaking during the occasion, the Chief Guest Mr. Ravi Sharma, Executive Chairman - CMAI Association of India and Founder & CEO - Phi Televentures, India commented, “there are approximately three billion people on the planet who do not have access to Internet or other forms of Information Technology. On one hand, private companies are making best use of the internet to expand their business and so are new age entrepreneurs. But the benefit is still far from reaching to the bottom of the pyramid. The foremost task is to make masses aware that they have many opportunities with the access to this new age infrastructure such as those of education, employment, income source and basic health care. Web, when, used as a tool to provide need based solutions will increase its acceptance and usage automatically. Broadband connectivity and services, if designed appropriately and innovatively and implemented effectively can become key drivers for several socio- economic gains. An analysis by the CII National Broadband Economy Committee in 2004 shows Broadband proliferation is directly proportional to GDP growth. Government should make a environment conducive to broadband proliferation by coming out with policies/ regulations in different areas such as interconnection on a national backbone, provision of sufficient spectrum, up gradation of existing networks and introduction of cyber laws and policies to protect content copyright and customer interest”.

Mr. Prakash Kumar- Director, Internet, CISCO Systems India Pvt. Ltd and the Guest of Honor for the occasion said that there is a big chasm between the facilities used by rural and urban areas. A meager 6% of Indian population uses Internet. This widening chasm has to be bridged through assisted access centers as started by Government under its various schemes like Common Services Centre (CSC) Scheme which provides a framework to enable setting up of 1, 00, 000+ ICT enabled access points. He further shared how IT has enabled doctors and teachers to be virtually present in rural areas, where people are unwilling to go and offer their services. He called upon the students to indulge in research and find out ways to use mobile for service delivery and to provide cheap and affordable handheld devices to people.
