Amity Institute of Training & Development completes one month of Animal Welfare Training
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Amity Institute of Training & Development (AITD) and National Institute of Animal Welfare (NIAW), This prestigious, tidy and well laid out Institute functions under the aegis of Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF), Government of India. Situated at Ballabgarh, on the Delhi – Mathura highway, NIAW hosts training programmes with the objective to spread awareness about the practices and principles of animal welfare among different sections of society.
Under the provisions of the MoU, AITD will plan and organize different programmes of 1, 2 & 4 weeks’ duration and any other types of seminars or conferences as may be needed in the future. AITD will liaise with Departments, Organizations, Universities, Institutions, individuals and other concerned groups for nomination of participants.
The first programme conducted by AITD got underway on the 18th February 2010. Fifteen young veterinarian women interns from Mathura Veterinary University reported for two weeks training at NIAW. The inaugural session was chaired by Mr. K.S. Bains, DG AITD. Others present on the occasion were Maj. Vinod Krishna, Director AITD, Mr. O.P. Joshi, Under Secretary Deptt. of Animal Welfare, Ministry of Environment and Forests.
The contents of different programmes are broadly covered under 4 heads viz. Ethics & Humane Practices, Applicable Laws & Rules, Public Health & Animal Health and Creation of Climate for Animal Welfare.
In the last one month AITD has gone through three 2 weeks’ programmes and one 4 week programme. For the shorter duration programme all participants have been veterinarian interns (Mathura Veterinary University & Pant Nagar University). Officials of Gaushalas and Shelter houses are going through the 4 weeks’ event. A total of 72 participants have undergone certificate training within the month.
International Women’s Day was celebrated on 8th March 2010. Present on that occasion were Mr. Anjani Kumar, Director, MoEF, Maj. Vinod Krishna, Programme Director and Col. (Dr.) Subhash Chand, Sr. Faculty. Two eminent ladies viz. Prof. Shashi Motilal (Delhi University) and Ms Mamta Sahai (Renowned Social Worker) were invited to address the young participants.
In his opening remarks Maj. Vinod Krishna congratulated Indian Women, on multi dimensional achievements and phenomenal contributions that have been made to put “India on an expressway to becoming a super power”. The day matched the historic decision to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha.
Mr. Anjani Kumar proudly recalled that the Animal Welfare Movement in India was spear-headed by the legendary Mrs. Rukmini Devi Arundale. He complimented the young interns for having chosen to attain knowledge about animal health & welfare and to “speak for the mute”. He exhorted the participant to devise persuasive ways to influence people to look after the animal world.
Ms Mamta Sahai, a leading personality of Delhi in the area of Woman and Child Welfare, lamented at the pathetic conditions of women and children, particularly in thousands of towns and villages across India - away from the Metropolis. She emphasized the need for more privileged women and men in all walks of life to give Indian women support, respect and recognition they so richly deserve.
Mrs. Shashi Motilal championed the cause of raising the levels of literacy and education among women in India. A literate mother, she said, would build a healthier and happier family. She made a special mention of the need for women to walk along with men to ensure well being and growth of the girl child.
All the participants took part in an Essay Competition on the subject, “What I would like to do for women upliftment in India”. Mrs Smriti Kumar gave away prizes to the proud winners Priyanka, Suraksha Gola and Yogita Adhikari.
