Amity Universe – British Standard Institution organises Corporate Forum on “Business Excellence”

Amity University and British Standards Institution (AUBSI) organized Corporate Forum on “What Management Standards have done to the Industry” at Amity University Campus, Sec-125, Noida. The objective of the forum was to bring Industry close to Academia and apprising students with the Industry expectations.

Delivering the welcome address Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Pro Vice Chancellor (A), Amity University Uttar Pradesh stated that “today industries are no longer looking for the qualification alone they are in need of Industry ready professionals. The real challenge in front of these professionals is to grasp the business nuances at the earliest and make effective contributions to the organization, utilizing the resources to the utmost and thereby achieving optimum customer satisfaction.

Dwelling on the topic of the forum Mr. Venkataram, MD, BSI, India, said that “Over 20 years ago management experts realized that buiness not only needs Standards for products but also to guide employees as to conduct themselves within an organization.” Mr. Venkataram shared that Standards have evolved themselves as per the need of the Society and elaborated on the difficulties associated with the implementation and execution of these Management Standards without which Business is likely to collide with larger problems. Mr. Venkataram stressed that the need of the hour is to institutionalize risk management in the companies as a vital part of business decision making. He advised the future management leaders to absorb and implement best practices which will make them more effective managers.

While presenting the Program Outline and Theme, Ms. Shama Bhardwaj, Project Officer, AUBSI, shared that AUBSI courses enable the students to become Industry ready even before they reach the Industries and targets to bridge the gap between field requirement and academics.

During his address Mr. M Thyagaraj, ED & CIO, ONGC said that “Business Excellence Standard is a standard to achieve all round excellence in management. There are 4 types of Business Standards in the world - ‘Business Excellence Standard (Holistic approach for manufacturing and production Industry), Business Excellence Innovation Standard (for Industries whose growth strategy is based on innovation), Business Excellence Standard People (for Industries where people are the main assets such as agriculture and farming) and Business Excellent Standard Services (for Industries where the main objective is to satisfy and delight the customers, such as the IT industry and Entertainment Industry).” Mr. Thyagaraj during his interaction with the audience also talked about the framework of Business Excellence Standard and its key areas like leadership, Planning, Information, People, Process, Customer and Results.

Talking about Global Impact of Standards and its evolution over time Mr. Pradeep Eledath, Head, Business Continuity Airtel, informed that earlier Standardization focused on quality and shared the knowledge about how BSI, ISO and BIS came into existence with their ever growing contribution towards the needs of standardization. Emphasizing on the growing expectation of the customers Mr. Eledath said “Today the customer is aware and has access to information with the support of IT and therefore they must be assured of correct quality at the correct price.”

Addressing the gathering, Mr. C.V Rao, Senior Counsellor, CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) said “Excellent organizations achieve and sustain superior levels of Performance that meet or exceed the expectations of all the stakeholders to achieve and maintain Sustainable Success”. During his interaction with the audience he advised that one must target to run faster than the fastest and must gain knowledge of what the industry is all about and recommended to the future management leaders to focus on consistent improvement of Quality Management System Standard QMS and nurture creativity, idea generation and innovation. During his address Mr. Ashish Bindal, Microsoft India said that “Standardization has made organizations more efficient and mature and has enabled the Industries to give more services to the consumers at a lower cost and ensured that everyone gets the same level of experience of the services regardless of where they are geographically located.” He urged the aspiring managers to understand that all big organizations need to follow Standards to sustain in the global world.

Also present during the forum were Prof. B.K Srivastava, Faculty, Amity Business School and Head, Centre of Excellence, Amity University, Mr. Arnab Mukherjee, Lead Consultant Business Continuity Planning, Colt, Mr. Vijay Kanwar, Advisor to Managing Director Sanden Vikas India Limited and Mr. Ranjan Dhar, Regional Head, Symantec Security Solutions.

The program was followed by a vivid and interactive session between students, speakers, senior officials from British Standard Institution and Heads of Institutions of Amity University wherein topics like Boundary Line Management, Crisis Communication and Importance of Innovation were discussed.
