Amity celebrates Software Freedom Day, OSTM’ 2010
Amity Technical Placement Centre organized a Technology Meet 2010 on the theme, “Innovation and Creativity using latest Technologies”
Amity has always provided a platform for the techno enthusiasts to promote and make awareness about the Free Software philosophy. These techno enthusiasts call themselves Amitys Free Software User Group. Looking at the use of Source Software and its amplified reach among the students community, Amity University celebrated Software Freedom Day as Technical Meet.
The technical meet witnessed the presence of software giants from various organizations who threw light upon the aforementioned theme. The company acquainted the students with latest technologies and development in the IT world. The IT leaders gave some valuable insight and tips to the students about piracy, copyright, infringement, licensing and also about some latest technologies like the .net technology.

Mr. Narendra Sisodia, Manager, Delhi Linux User Group, Mr. Deepak Kapoor, Senior Architect, Fiscrv and Mr. Ravi Chandran JV, Board Member, Agile Software Community of India and also associated with JK Technosoft.
Dr. B. Shukla, Pro-VC, Academics, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Sodhi, Vice President, IT, Amity University and Dr. Ajay Rana, Director, Amity Technical Placement Centre was present in the inaugural session of the Technical Meet.
Mr. Narendra Sisodia, Manager, Delhi Linux User Group spoke on the intricacies of copyright, licencing, piracy and also their technicalities. He said that we have a thousand years culture of sharing knowledge. But the current age is of legalities and restrictions. Therefore one has to use license for sharing our knowledge. License is like getting permission for using someone else’s work or information. Through source codes also one can gather information especially for academic purpose by the student community.
Mr. Deepak Kapoor, Senior Architect, Fiscrv elaborately discussed about the difference between source and free software. He gave example of Google search engine which is free to access but sources are not disclosed. He said that as one needs to know the technique to run software which is not disclosed. There are differences between Free and disclosed source in the IT world. Technology choice and cost are most essential things one has to take account of. This source is something about intellectual property which someone is ready to share. One can read it but cannot copy it.
