Sharing his thoughts about the increasing reach of physiotherapy, Dr. Ali Irani said, “Physiotherapy has reached the Pan African Countries and rural areas of Maharashtra through Tele Medicine consultations and treatment and in next 2- 3 years Tele- Medicines and Tele- Physiotherapy will be available on mobiles through 3G and 4G based technologies. Some mobile operators are already working in this area. Three years back, Physiotherapy was the second best profession in USA and Indians will make it the first best profession in their country. The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) has 101 countries as its members, who collectively represent over 3, 50, 000 Physiotherapists in the world out of which 35, 000 are in India, which means that 10% of world’s physiotherapists are from India. At present, there are 180 recognized colleges offering Bachelor’s Degree in Physiotherapy, 82 colleges offering Master’s Degree in Physiotherapy with specialization and 8 colleges /universities offering PhD. Programmes in Physiotherapy.” Talking about Brain Mapping of Sportsmen and the related research being conducted at Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai, Dr Irani shared that there are basically two zones in the brain- Alpha Zone which ranges from 8-12 hertz and Gamma Zone which ranges from 30 hertz and above. As per a study conducted by a group of post graduate students of Nanavati Hospital, Dr. Irani stated that, these zones in the brain can largely have an effect on the performance of a sportsman. When a sportsman gives his best performance his mind is in Alpha zone and when he gives his worst performance, his mind is in Gamma zone. Alpha zone is associated with ideal functioning capability and therefore, a sportsman in Alpha zone will give his best performance in anything he is doing. Referring to the Independent Physiotherapy Council in states such as Delhi, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, he suggested that even UP should have its own State Council of Physiotherapists. Dwelling on the changing role of Physiotherapists and increasing reach of physiotherapy, Dr. Irani said, “today the greatest challenge of a physiotherapist is not to treat the disorder but to identify and prevent the cause of the disorder. Physiotherapy is increasingly being used in Pre- Natal Care, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Neurology, Disaster Management, Neurology, Geriatrics, Disaster Management and Rural Rehabilitation.”
