Amity Institute of Travel and Tourism organises industry interaction for the students during orientation ceremony

Amity Institute of Travel and Tourism kick started its new academic session with an Orientation session spread over 3 days from August 4- 6, 2010 at Amity Campus, Sector- 44, Noida.

The orientation started on a holy note with a “ Hawan”, thereafter, Dr. Manohar Sajnani- Director, Amity Institute of Travel and Tourism welcomed and addressed the new batch comprising of 33 students of B.A.- Tourism Administration and 24 students of M. A – Tourism Administration.

Prof. (Dr.) Gurinder Singh- Pro VC (I) and Director General, Amity International Business School apprised the new batch of students with the scope of International exposure at Amity University and how the students can enrich and benefit themselves from the same.

The second day started with an informative industry interaction with Mr. Jay Mukherjee- Sr. VP, Hi Tours (India), Mr. Vikas Khanduri- Managing Director, Viva Voyages Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Sachin Sharma- Director, Holiday India (Pvt.) Ltd.

Mr. Jay Mukherjee, while addressing the students, highlighted the enormous potential of travel and tourism industry globally and the opportunities which are still untapped and need to be explored in the industry. He talked about several locations in India and abroad which are hardly visited or promoted as tourist locations such as North East and Orissa in India and Jordan, Greece, Mexico, Peru and Egypt in the world. Stressing the lack of ethics in Indian travel industry, Mr. Mukherjee said,“ there is a difference between enhancing the profit and maximizing the profits, which needs to be understood by Indian Travel industry. Unlike West, there are no checks or regulatory mechanisms in Indian travel industry. It is suggested that leaders of the industry should come together and form a self governing body to manage and oversee the affairs in the industry”. He motivated the students and urged them to be ethical in the dealings, to develop a love for traveling in and keep learning and updating them throughout their lives.

Dwelling on the qualities to make big in the Travel and Tourism industry, Mr. Vikas Khanduri said that there is a huge vacuum for leadership in the industry. There are so many vacancies but there are not talented people to fill those vacancies. He advised students to be serious towards their studies and career, to be informed, prepared, committed and focused in order to be successful in the industry.

Sharing his own experience with the students, Mr. Sachin Sharma encouraged the students to be clear about what they want to become in their lives and averred “making right decision at right time is very important”. He advised students to refrain from job hopping which makes a negative impact on their resume and nobody likes to employ rolling stones. He apprised students of his success story and how in a matter of just 3-4 years, his company has been able to secure a strong place for itself in the industry, giving tough competition to the counterparts.

The interaction was followed by a motivational session on “ Leadership and Personality Development” by Brig. Arjan Dutta- Director, Amity SSB Academy.

The session concluded with “Alumni Talk” during which the alumni of the institute namely Mr. Shobhit- Holiday India, Ms. Shoma- Air Lanka, Ms. Vyoma Pratap- Compass India, Ms. Arti Choudhary- TUI (AG), Mr. Akshay Punj- Kuoni, Mr. Utkarsh Punj- Thomas Cook, Mr. Apoorva Vardman- makemytrip,com, Ms. Aakriti Rai- LPTI (MICE), Ms. Ankita Kumar- LPTI (Inbound) and Ms. Manik Kaur- Cox and Kings mentored, counseled and guided the students of new batch as to how to brace themselves in order to have an edge over their counterparts in the industry.
