16th Annual Mega Sports Competition “Sangathan 2014” begins at Amity

The stage was, once again, set at Amity University for the annual 16th Mega Inter-Institutional Sports Meet-“SANGATHAN 2014”, spanning over two months. The Sports Meet was inaugurated today amidst elaborate celebrations at University Campus, Sector- 125, Noida.

“Sangathan” is an annual Event organized to inculcate the values associated with Sports such as team spirit, camaraderie, healthy competition, perseverance, hard work, dedication etc amongst the students. Over 20,000 students from all the Amity Universities and Campuses located in India and abroad would participate in almost 20 Sports Events including Hockey, Cricket, Football, Tennis, Swimming, Squash among others.

The event started with the ceremonial lighting of “Mashaal” simultaneously in all Amity Campuses across India and abroad. The “Sangathan Mashaal” from University Campus was taken to Sector- 44 Campus and further to Greater Noida Campus, accompanied by entourage of senior officials and staff of Amity University. The Sports Captain of Amity School of Engineering and Technology (Last year’s Winners) lit the “Sangathan Flame” with the Mashaal at University Campus, Sector- 125, Noida.

The event witnessed the presence of Ms. Pooja Chauhan- Vice Chairperson, Amity Humanity Foundation, Senior members of Management including Dr. Gurinder Singh- Group Additional Vice Chancellor, Amity; Dr. (Mrs.) B. Shukla- Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Head of Institutions, Head of Departments, Senior Officials, faculty members, students and staff.

The Sports Captains of various teams administered the pious OATH on behalf of all the players, promising to play fair, displaying true sportsmanship and team spirit.

Declaring the 16th Inter Amity Institutions Sports Meet open,Mr. Atul Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University, Uttar Pradesh said that it is a matter of great pride to be amongst brilliant Sports Captains and all Amitians for the most important event in the calendar of Amity, marking the Founder’s Day. He shared that "Sangathan" aims to instill all those qualities which are required to excel in personal and professional lives and Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity wants each and every Amitian to imbibe these virtues. He announced that during Sangathan 2014, 20 brilliant Sportspersons would be identified who may/may not have played at National and International levels and a special Scholarship Schemes would be drafted to encourage their talent. Citing a study, Mr. Atul Chauhan said that the vast majority of top CEOs’ of America, leading their companies, have been Sportspersons in their lives. He stressed that Sportspersons have better chances to succeed because they have the capacity to take risk, to lead and face success /failures. Motivating the students, he further averred that the fact few students have been chosen to be Sports Captains for SANGATHAN is a big honor for them. Presenting a brief overview of “Sangathan 2014”, Prof. (Dr.) Kalpana Sharma- Chairperson, Organizing Committee Sangathan 2014 said that Sangathan is a momentous occasion celebrating the spirit of unity of all Amitians. She recalled the humble beginning of “Sangathan” in 1999 and how it grew over the years to become the Mega Sports Meet where thousands of students participate and display exemplary sportsmanship. She shared that this year, students from 6 Amity Universities in India, 5 international campuses and 13 Amity Global campuses in India will compete in 20 different Sports at four venues.

The students of Amity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences presented a beautiful fusion of Lezim and Martial Arts

The inauguration was followed by an Exhibition Hockey Match between the teams fromAmity School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences and Amity School of Engineering and Technology wherein theAmity School of Engineering and Technology won by 3-1 goals.
