Chenoy, Managing Director & CEO, National Skills Development Council (NSDC) accompanied by Mr. Ranjan Chaudhary-Principal (Programme Development), NSDC visited Amity University to discuss and deliberate upon various collaborative options between NSDC and Amity for bridging the skill gap in the country.
Welcoming the distinguished guests, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group said that Amity, since its inception, has always been committed to nurturing globally employable youth by instilling in them requisite skills through skill matrix developed in consultation with industry. Dr. Chauhan opined that India should try to emulate the education system followed in Germany which gives ample freedom to the students for horizontal and vertical learning and thereby, contributes to the success and progress of the economy of Germany. Dr. Chauhan stressed that Indian educational institutes should focus more on hands on training and should make 3-4 days working in industry mandatory every week for its students so that they are trained in sync with the industry needs.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chenoy appreciated the leadership, ambition, energy and entrepreneurship emanated by one and all in Amity. He shared that NSDC has a target to develop 15 crore skilled professionals in the country and he is looking forward to Amity to contribute atleast 5-10% of the skilled professionals. Sharing important facts and figures, he stated that over 347 million skilled manpower is required over 10 years to sustain industry growth. He remarked that India has a big challenge of skilling / upskilling 500 million by 2022, which is possible through fundamental education reforms across primary, secondary and higher education.
He lamented that in India, there are more Engineering seats and colleges than total number of technical colleges. Referring to Mc. Kinsey's global survey, he stated that over 83% of the educational institutions across the world felt that they are serving the needs of the students whereas not even half the students feel that their education needs are being served well by their educational institutions.
He stressed that in recent years, Private sector has made investments in Engineering, Medical, Nursing, Law and Management education but not in technical education. He outlined 29 Sector Skill Councils started by NSDC which define standards for over 501 job roles.
He shared various schemes started by NSDC to bridge the skill gap including "UDAAN", "STAR", "WORLD SKILLS COMPETITION" and called upon Amity to collaborate through Stand Alone Centers or by aligning with Sector Skill Councils.
Mr. Chenoy suggested that Indian Education system should move from supply based to demand led intervention and Amity can herald this change in the education system by providing students educations and skills they need and desire.
