17th International Workshop on the “Physics of Semiconductor Devices” starts at Amity
17th International Workshop on the “Physics of Semiconductor Devices” was inaugurated at Amity Campus, Sector- 125, Noida by Dr. Farooq Abdullah- Hon’ble Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri J.Satyanarayana, IAS- Secretary Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India ,Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group and Prof. Vikram Kumar- Centre for Applied Research in Electronics,Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
The Workshop aims to provide a valuable forum for interaction between Scientists& Technologists working in the area of semiconductor materials and devices across the world to discuss and deliberate upon the emerging technologies and concerned issues .
Speakersfrom India (11 IITs and 90 Institutions of repute across India) and abroad fromover 20 countries including USA, Germany, UK, Japan, Singapore, Netherlands,Australia, Sweden, Indonesia and India are participating in the Workshop.
Welcoming the august gathering, Dr. V K Jain- Director, Amity Institute of Advanced Research and Studies (Materials & Devices) highlighted the importance of Semi- conductor devices in the Indian context and shared that during the three day Workshop over 400 Research Papers would be presented on new and emerging areas such as Optoelectronics, Device Modelling and Simulation,Display and Lighting, VLSI and ULSI Technology, High Frequency/Power Devices,Photovoltaics, Nanotechnology and Emerging areas, MEMS and Sensors and Organic Electronics.
While inaugurating the Workshop, Dr. Farooq Abdullah- Hon’ble Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy said, “Energy means life and the global appetite for energy is voracious while resources are limited. As environmental issues have intensified, the demand for renewable energy has increased. Semi-conductors are the key technology that enables to harness alternative energy resources. Semi- conductors have tremendous potential to preserve our renewable resources by increasing the efficiency of existing devices.” He stressed that one third of the energy consumed worldwide is electricity and the trend is rising. Therefore, the key for the future growth is energy efficiency and smart semi- conductor devices.
Addressing over 400 Kashmiri students and faculty members of Amity, Dr. Farooq Abdullah called himself a “Disco Dancer” thereby, meaning that he is different because he realizes that you only live once and therefore, spread joy and happiness. He believes that “Life is what you want to give to life”.
Responding to the concerns of these students regarding the availability of quality education in Kashmir and job opportunities for Kashmiri Pandits who want to go back and live with their families after finishing education and work for the development of the State, Dr. Farooq Abdullah said,“We should realize Kashmir will not go anywhere and it is people of Kashmir whohave to change their thinking. Kashmiris have to build Kashmir. Hindustan is vibrant and the only recourse for Kashmir to have a bright future is through Hindustan. People of the nation should start respecting each other.” He motivated the students to be good human beings, spread happiness and see and treat fellow beings as humans. He urged them to find God in their own self and advised them to make friends forever in University and expressed his hope that they succeed in their efforts to become good human beings.
Hinting on the issue of funding being provided from Delhi to some people in Kashmir, he expressed his concern that these funds were being misused and ruining the country.
During the interaction, the students suggested the Hon’ble Minister to help open Amity University in Kashmir so that the youth of Kashmir gets an opportunity to study near their homes, in their own state. They also requested him to economically strengthen and develop the State so that Kashmir could re-gain its “glory”
Sharing his thoughts, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group said that the area of Semi- Conductors and Renewable energy is globally important and is rapidly emerging as one of the most important area of Research. He expressed his hope that the Workshop would lead to joint research, joint patents and publications with the participants and participating countries.
Addressing the gathering, Shri J. Satyanarayana, IAS- Secretary Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India said that Semi-conductor Devices are need of the country today. Every field of activity,every sector has a large component of semi conductor devices and as we go into the future, our dependence on Semi- conductor devices is bound to increase. He stressed that 92% of the electronics consumed in the country are imported and Semi- conductor market is estimated to become $ 400 billion by 2020 from $ 70billion, at present. He called for nurturing specialized manpower in the area of Semi- conductors, Nano- Electronics and other related emerging areas. He revealed that 40% of the market of Semi- conductor Devices is in China and Government is planning two Semi- conductor fabrication labs in the country to promote designing and manufacturing of Semi- conductor devices in India.
During the day, numerous technical sessions unfolded simultaneously on different topics such as “Nanotechnology”, “MEMS and SENSORS”, “Organic Electronics”,“VLSI and ULSI Technology” and “Optoelectronics”.
During the Workshop, over 700 delegates would participate in the Workshop which will witness technical sessions on Photovoltaics, VLSIand ULSI Technology, Device Modeling, Optoelectronics, MEMS and SENSORS and other Emerging Technologies.
