Dr. Priti Krishna, Western University Canada delivers lecture on “Brassinosteroid” at Amity University
Dr. Priti Krishna, Professor (Biology), Western University (WU), Canada & Associate Professor (Environmental & Rural Science) University of New England, Australia delivered lecture on “Brassinosteroid, a biotechnological target for crop improvement”. The lecture was organized by Amity Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation at Amity University, Sector-125.
Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President – Amity Science Technology & Innovation Foundation, Dr. Sunil Saran, Sr. Vice Chairman – ASTIF, Dr. Abha Agnihotri – Amity Institute of Microbial Technology were present during the occasion amongst a galaxy of Scientists.
Dr. Sunil Saran, Sr. Vice Chairman – ASTIF while introducing Dr. Priti Krishna, said that Dr. Krishna is one of the world’s leading specialists in the area of Biotechnology and Plant Microbiology. Dr Saran admired her for significant contributions towards the study of brassinosteroids effects in plants & animals and raising awareness of the health and commercial benefits of sea buckthorn.
Addressing the scientific conglomeration, Dr. Priti Krishna said that a scientist should always have the passion for new research activity which may be interdisciplinary like she has a passion for biology and worked in microbiology, biotechnology, plant genomes etc. While delivering the lecture on “Brassinosteroid, a biotechnological target for crop improvement”she said that brassinosteroid are a group of plant steroid hormones which come from bassica which is from mustard family. In various studies performed on plants, it has been shown that every aspect of plant development is effected positivly by using brassinosteroid. The genetic modulation of brassinosteroid biosynthesis result in increased shoot and root biomass, increase seed yield, increased abiotic and biotic stress tolerance, had no impact on oil content or composition. Dr Krishna said that the objective of using brassinosteroid is to contribute to the development of crop varieties with enhanced
- drought, salt, extreme temperature tolerance;
- disease & pest resistance
- seed yield
While using brassinosteroid in animals it has shown many effects like lowered blood glucose level in obese mice with hyperglycaemia, prevented HSV-1 multiplication and viral spreading, it inhibited growth of human cancer cell lines and it improved physical fitness in healthy animal.
Dr. Krishna said that there is tremendous scope of research in this field which may include brassinosteroid regulated epigenetic processes, active mechanism of CBPs, brassinosteroid & root traits, nutrient deficiency etc.
Scientists, faculty from Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity Institute of Microbial Technology, Amity Institute of Applied Sciences, Amity Institute of Nanotechnology and other Amity Institutions were present during the lecture session.
