Amity Law School Centre II organized a day long National Seminar cum Training Program on 'Human Rights' in association with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) at Amity Campus, Sector- 125, Noida
Prof. Mamta Srivastava, Addl Director, ALS II, accompanied by the faculty members of the Institution, welcomed the guests.
Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh urged the budding lawyers of the Institute to make best use of the training on Human Rights.
The seminar comprised of four technical sessions- “Introduction to Human Rights”, “Human Rights Institutions in India”, “Rights of Women and Children”, “Rights of other vulnerable groups” wherein eminent experts from diverse fields shared their views including Dr Ramesh Gupta, Senior Advocate, Ex Chairman And Member, Bar Council Of Delhi; Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Director, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi; Prof. (Dr.) Tahir Mahmood, Honourable Chairman, Amity Institute Of Advanced Legal Studies ;Dr. Qazi M. Usman, Assistant Professor of Law, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi; Mr. Kalyan Singh, Advocate and Retired Sale Tax Commissioner ;Dr. Ghulam Yazdani, Assistant Professor of Law, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi; Ms. Krinna Shah, Programme Director, HAQ Centre for Child Rights; Dr. Asad Malik, Assistant Prfoessor of Law, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi; Dr. D K Sharma , Inspecting Officer, Labour Department; Mr. Piyush Sharma, Secretary, Building and Other Construction Workers, Welfare Board and Dr. R Kurup, Advocate Supreme Court of India.
The distinguished speakers discussed and deliberated upon the urgent need of promotion and protection of human rights across various states in India and amongst nations. The sessions apprised students with the broader meaning of "Human Rights", which are the rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the constitution or embodied in the International covenants and enforceable by courts in India. The students enjoyed learning more about the human rights issues through interactive sessions and paper presentations. The speakers, quoting various human rights Acts and Covenants made the audience understand why achieving human rights for all should be the highest aspiration of all the people across the world.
During day various topics were discussed including 'Universal declaration on human rights', 'Constitutional provisions', 'International covenants regarding human rights', 'Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 'Composition and functioning of NHRC/SHRCs and Other National/State Commissions', 'UN convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, 1979 and its optional protocols' and 'UN convention on the rights of the Child, 1989 and its optional protocols', 'Bonded Labour Issues and the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act 1976' , 'Child Labour Issues and Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986' and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, Civil Liberties Act, 1988 and The Forest Rights Act, 2006'
During the valedictory session, Ms. Kushal Singh, Chairperson, National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights and Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Universe shared their views with the gathering
Ms. Kushal Singh, Chairperson, National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights applauded the efforts of the Amity Law School, Centre II in sensitizing and empowering the youth of India by organizing a seminar on Human Rights issues. She appreciated the wide range of Human Rights issues covered under the training during the day.
Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Universe expressed that Amity students are the most well informed citizens of India who are aware of their human rights but respect others' too. He stressed upon organizing more such seminars and trainings in future to disseminate the importance of the values of dignity and equality, so that there could be freedom, justice and peace for all in the world.
The students from the Institute presented a musical performance and skit, through which they beautifully highlighted some of the Human Rights issues.
