Welcoming the august gathering and sharing his concern over the over-exploitation of resources affecting the climate and environment, Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Prakash, Director, Amity School of Engineering & Technology said that whatever the mankind is enjoying has come from nature. Mankind has been over exploiting the nature for its selfish ends and if this continues, the nature will not forgive us. Dr. Prakash stressed that we all have to be the judicious users of resources. We should pledge that each one of us will plant one tree every year on his/her birthday.
Sharing her views on the theme of the Conference, the Chief Guest Ms. Mili Majumdar, Director, Sustainable Habitat- ADaRSH said that due to mindless urbanization, we are living in a world which is full of shortages in terms of water, power, fuel etc. With the globalization, the world has shrunk and so has our resources. If we still don’t do anything for environment than it will be very difficult for future generation to survive in the planet earth. Addressing the audience Ms. Majumdar said that you are all privileged that your taps are full of water, your room is warm in winters and you have vehicles for transportation. But think about millions of people who don’t have access to clean water, electricity. It is important to think about community and the whole nation. Speaking about climate change, Ms. Majumdar said that whole world is witnessing the perils of climate change in the form of polar vortex in USA where many cities are freezing to -500 C and tremendous heat wave in Australia where temperature is touching 500C. She warned that according to UN study the world average temperature will rise 40C in few years to come. She said that when we talk about responsible development, we must respect nature. Ms. Majumdar gave some tips to students for saving resources and environment:
- Setting of the Air-condition not below to 250C
- Use of electric saving devices
- Use of solar energy appliances
Ms. Majumdar said that only policy makers or government alone can not protect nature, it is the responsibility of all of us to save energy and protect environment.
Expressing her views during the occasion, Dr. Nirupama Prakash, Director – Amity School of Social Sciences stressed that India has always been environment friendly. Most of the houses in our rural areas and old havelis were build in such a way that they remain cool in summers and warm in winters. Due to rapid urbanization, we have forgotten the environment and nature. It is the duty of all of us to have sustainable development linked with environment protection.
Five councils including the Security Council, The General Assembly, The Human Rights Council, League of Arab States, and The UN Office of Outer Space Affairs were simulated in AMIMUN wherein the students discussed various agendas in the context of turning grey to green.
