Three day “Amity International Model United Nations (AIMUN) Conference” concludes at Amity University
Amity Educational Resource Centre( AERC) together with Amity International Schools organized three day “Amity International Model United Nations (AIMUN) Conference” from November 21 - 23, 2013 at Amity University Campus, Sector-125, Noida.
The Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations wherein students conduct their research on a country, take on the roles of diplomats, recreate the work of the General Assembly Committees, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.
Over 450 students across India and abroad including France, Spain, Slovenia, Italy, Germany, USA, Maldives, Mauritius, Kazakhstan participated in AIMUN, taking up the roles of UN Delegates in eight Councils- General Assembly, Security Council, UNESCO, CCPCJ, Futuristic Security Council, UNFCCC, RAW and NATO. They discussed and debated upon several key issues haunting the world such as Cyber War, Arms Trafficking and Terrorism, Equal Access to Education for Women, The future of Nanotechnology, Nuclear program of North Korea, Post 2014 withdrawal from Afghanistan, Ratification and implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, International cooperation for the improvement of access to legal aid in criminal justice systems, Water–Ice Cap melting, thermal expansion, and ground water depletion, CO2 Accountability Measures: Land-use, Forestry and Carbon Sink Capacity and Oil Security and Energy Availability
HE Janos Terenyi- Ambassador of Hungary in India, Ms. Lise Grande, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in India and Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools graced the valedictory function and felicitated the student delegates for their exemplary performance during AIMUN 2013
Delivering the key note address, Ms. Lise Grande, UN Resident Coordinator said that MUNs are serious, academic simulation of UN proceedings which teaches leadership, teamwork and diplomacy skills to the students. She called participants lucky enough to have this golden opportunity of getting apprised with the functioning of UN through participating in MUNs. She narrated interesting experiences of her life, working in different capacities in UN. Sharing her thoughts on what makes a good leader, Ms. Grande stressed that a good leader knows his team well; understand their concerns; take decisions to arrive at feasible solutions and best decisions may not always arise out of consensus. She expressed her hope that the participants of AIMUN would have experienced fierce and challenging debates and felt the same frustration that UN delegates actually face while arriving at consensus.
Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools congratulated all the National and International delegates who participated in the Conference and motivated them to make the most out of the learning of the Conference. She stressed that academics is important but more important is to become a good human being and have compassion for fellow human beings and MUNs contribute a lot in making students understand that all human beings are one, irrespective of our color, religion, country or race.
Addressing the gathering, HE Janos Terenyi- Ambassador of Hungary in India said that participating in MUNs is very important since they give international experience to students and help them in acquiring the skills to deal with International crisis . He remarked that being a good leader is important for business as well as internal and international politics. A good leader knows how to arrive at consensus and in a globalised world, it is very important to understand each other and compromise with each other to live in a harmonious world. He acknowledged that India is a global power in the making; it is about to become the 4th largest economy in the world and therefore, suggested that India should get a permanent place in the Security Council.
During the ceremony, the outstanding delegates in each committee were honored with “Best Delegate and High Commendation Award”; the delegates who submitted the Best Paper in their respective committee prior to the conference were given “Best Position Paper Award” and the delegations who excelled in all areas were given “Best Delegation Awards”.

A student delegate from Germany representing Maldova in General Assembly, Nikolai Shayani expressed that he is participating in International MUN for the first time and would try giving solutions to issues such as Cyber warfare, Arms Trafficking and Terrorism w.r.t. Maldova. He stressed that AIMUN would be an enriching and informative experience for him and he is looking forward to befriend students from other countries and get acquainted with their country, culture, issues and other things.
Aashish Chaudhary, a Class XI student from Dwarka International School, Dwarka, who represented Bangladesh in UNESCO expressed his joy and excitement of participating in AIMUN. He remarked that MUNs are very beneficial for the students worldwide, giving them vast exposure to the culture, traditions, policies, and problems of a country; they are expected to use a plethora of skills in order to represent a country such as presentation skills, communication skills , research, policy analysis, active listening. The overall experience of MUN is very “informative and enlightening.
Another delegate, Vatsalya Saini from Genesis Global School who represented Netherlands in NATO shared that it has become a passion for him to participate in MUNs since they give him a platform to don the mantle of the ambassadors of various countries, think out of the box, analyze sensitive situations and provide sustainable solutions to the world problems.
The Indian schools which participated in the Conference include Cambridge School, Indirapuram; DPS Schools in Gurgaon, R K Puram, Mathura Road, Rohini, Noida; Tagore International School, Vasant Vihar, Suncity, Gurgaon; Modern School Barakhamba Road and others.
