Amity Students learn the Art of Origami during the Workshop

Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding which is popular all over the world especially amongst youngsters. Origami has now been evolved into a modern art form. To give practical exposure of this art form to the students, Amity University in association with Japan Foundation organized one day workshop on Origami.

Mr. Katsuma Doi,Director General – The Japan Foundation, New Delhi, Ms. Machiko Yamamura, Assistant Director – The Japan Foundation, Ms. Miyuki Kawamura- Origami Expert, Maj. Gen. R.K. Dhawan, Advisor – International Affairs Division,Amity University were present during the workshop.

While conducting the workshop, Ms. Miyuki Kawamura- Origami Expert demonstrated Modular Origami and prepared various figures using this technique. While explaining the fundamentals of Modular Origami, Ms. Kawamura said that the technique can be used to create interesting and impressive origami artworks of mathematical figures, such as polyhedrons. It generally involves a two-stage paper-folding technique which requires multiple sheets of paper. In the first stage, each sheet of paper is folded into a module. In the second stage, the numerous modules are assembled into a three-dimensional structure, and a polyhedral shape can be created. Ms. Kawamura stated that many intricate artworks can be made from simple modules.

Mr. Katsuma Doi, Director General – The Japan Foundation, New Delhi said that origami reflects the creativity of an artist. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques without cutting or using glue. Speaking about The Japan Foundation- New Delhi,Mr. Doi said that it was officially established in January 1994 to promote Japanese culture and language. Various cultural events, exhibitions, lectures related to Japan are being organized by the Foundation.

Students of Amity School of Engineering & Technology actively participated in the workshop. Speaking enthusiastically, Ms. Shivani, a Student said that she had only heard of origami though the website and was keen to learn this art. Through origami she will bring out her creative side.

Another student Mr. Abhishek said that he is very excited to be part of this workshop. Origami Art which looks very difficult is so easy to understand. By using only paper one can create beautiful designs.
