Dr. U.N. Das, President & CEO, UND Life Sciences, Ohio, USA delivers lecture on “Lipids as potential Drug for Cancer” during ASTIF lecture series at Amity University

Dr. U.N. Das, President & CEO, UND Life Sciences, Ohio, USA and Editor-in-Chief, Lipids in Health & Disease delivered a lecture on the topic “Lipids as potential Drug for Cancer”. The special lecture was organized by Amity Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation under the ASTIF lecture series at Amity University, Sector-125.

Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President – ASTIF; Dr. Sunil Saran, Chairman - AICPHT&CCM welcomed Dr. U.N. Das.

Dr. U.N. Das, during his lecture, said most of the time when one talks about Cancer, no one talks about lipid and its role as anti cancer agent. While elaborating his talk, Dr Das said that cancer and diabetes are two sides of same coin, if one understand cancer one can know diabetes also and vice versa. Dr. Das said that tumor cells produce low levels of free radicals and have high relatively high amount of anti-oxidants. Tumor cells have low peroxide tone than normal cells which leads to high rate of proliferation. According to Dr. Das, tumor cells have low levels of PUFAs especially AA, EPA & DHA. It is hypothesized that certain PUFAs will kill cancer cells in-vitro and in-vivo. Fatty Acids like GLA (Gama Linolenic Acid), AA, EPA, DHA can selectively kill tumor cells and do not harm normal cells. Dr Das further added that if antioxidants and vitamin E are given to persons suffering from mild malignancy than it will enhance the growth of tumor cells.

Sharing a study that Dr. Das did from 1988-92 in which 6 patients of stage 4 were selected, Dr Das said that stage 4 is a stage in which patient has undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and recurrence of tumor and may have 6-8 weeks of life. After taking consent from ethics committee they inserted fatty acid GLA I mg per day for 10 days. 5 patients were able to live for around 2 years 8 months after the procedure.

Dr Das said that GLA can not be injected locally since patient may bleed. GLA is inserted into arterially by using catherator. Dr Das clarified that GLA may stop growth of tumor cells but whatever tumor has done damage to the body can not be reversed.

Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President – ASTIF said that Cancer is the major problem in India. The drug which is discovered by Dr.Das has tremendous therapeutic effects. Dr. Selvamurthy remarked that it is a matter of great pride that he is working on how one can use lipids as anti cancer agents.

Scientist, faculty from Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity Institute of Microbial Technology, Amity Institute of Nanotechnology and other Amity Institutions were present during the lecture session.
