Amity Institute of Psychology & Allied Sciences and Amity Institute of Behavioural (Health) & Allied Sciences organises World Mental Health Day
Amity Institute of Psychology & Allied Sciences (AIPS) and Amity Institute of Behavioural (Health) & Allied Sciences (AIBHAS) organised World Mental Health Day 2013 on the topic “Wellbeing and Mental Health across Life Span” in accordance with the WHO theme of the year, 2013 ‘Mental Health and Older Adults’ on 10 October, 2013.
The programme included talk by Dr. Avdesh Sharma, a well known Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Past President of Indian Psychiatric Society (North Zone) and Delhi Psychiatric Society, Director of ‘Parivartan’ Center for Mental Health & Founder “MIND’s VISION, Ms. Pallavi, Manager, Programmes, Help Age India and Mr. Bharat Kundra, Life Style Consultant, an overview on the theme by Prof. (Dr.) Abha Singh, Director AIPS & Acting Head AIBHAS
Prof (Dr) Abha Singh shared the statistics and stated “The Indians now live longer but in Poor health in the old age”. World Mental Health Day 2013 is focused on celebrating the enormous potential older people have in terms of living an active, positive later life and also in maintaining a healthy social involvement in the community. Age is a mind issue rather health issue. According to the World Health Organization the proportion of the world population over 60 years will double between 2000 and 2050, from around 11% to 22%.
Key Guest Speaker of the Day, Dr. Avdesh Sharma during his talk conveyed that there is a need to innovatively increase the number of Psychologist and psychiatrists to deal with Mental Health issues across life span in our country. He said that “Prevention of mental health problems” is the future and our focus should be over there only. Regarding old age he said, that it is important to plan early so as to be strengthened in old age. Also, he informed students and faculty that Indian Psychology is at present on the World Map, so every Indian needs to know, understand and learn Indian Psychology and one method is meditation which can be utilized for relaxation and as a Psycho-Spiritual Technique.
Ms. Pallavi, Manager, Programmes, Help Age India shared the importance of old age and also shared with the audience the various programmes that Help Age India is undergoing where Psychology students or any student can actively participate and really share the concern of Elderly people.
Mr. Bharat Kundra, Life Style Consultant as Peace Ambassador, shared his life experiences and emphasized on the importance of Meditation to achieve Success and Happiness in life.
The programme included an On the Spot Essay Writing Competition on the topic “Issues and Management of Old Age”, Mime Performance “Facets of mind”, Skit ‘Do Raah’ and Dance Performance ‘Zindagi ka Safar by students of AIPS and AIBHAS conveying the Life Span Issues and Management.
The first prize winner for On the Spot Essay Writing Competition was Ankit Kumar, student of AITEM (B.Tech (E&M) and other winners were given with Certificate and Prizes in the end.
