Amity School of Engineering & Technology organises Two day Information Technology Summit – Confluence 2013

The last decade has witnessed remarkable changes in the field of Information Technology specially in the domain of Social Media, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud. Social Media has become the mode of communication which allows users to share, interact and communicate in virtual communities based on mobile and web technologies. With a mission to keep abreast with the latest technological advancement, a two day International Conference – Confluence 2013 – The Next Generation Information Technology Summit was organized from September 26-27 by Amity School of Engineering & Technology in association with EMC Corporation at Amity University Campus, Sector- 125, Noida.

The two day Conference witnessed more than 400 technical paper presentations by researchers on the theme topic. Plenary sessions were held on topics like “Next Generation Information Technology – Challenges & Future ahead” and “Open Educational Resources as a Catalyst for Faculty Development” in which industry luminaries from Information Technology, Mobile Technologies and Tele Communications field shared their experiences.

The Valedictory Ceremony of “Confluence” was graced by Mr. Rajeev Gupta, IAS, Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India; Prof. (Dr.) Ajoy Kumar Ray, Vice Chancellor, Bengal Engineering & Science University; Dr. Nikhil Sinha, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University; Prof. (Dr.) Aditya Mathur, Head of Pillar and Professor, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore; Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Group and Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Prakash, Director, Amity School of Engineering & Technology, AUUP.

 Mr. Rajeev Gupta, IAS, Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India said “Information Technology is changing the face of the world. In earlier times, web was meant only for spider web and clouds were in the sky”. He called upon the future technology leaders to become the masters of technology and not its slave. Since for gaining success in life one has to be in peace and harmony. He added “Keeping pace with the IT advancement is of paramount importance today as it is only with the help of IT advancement that India can prove its Intellectual wealth.”

Prof. (Dr.) Ajoy Kumar Ray, Vice Chancellor, Bengal Engineering & Science University said that Information Technology has created profound impact on every aspect of human life. Society has witnessed an unprecedented growth of internet, wireless technology, social networking, smart phones, and tablets during the last two decades, now society is ready to embrace the Next generation Information Technology, with bigger promises to influence the lives of all people around the globe.

During his address Dr. Ashok. K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Group said “Internet is a genuine boon to India as it empowers the unparallel Indian brains with access to knowledge and upgraded information which enables the Indian intellect to stand parallel to the intellect of the world. He urged his students to practice and utilize the knowledge that they gained from the valuable sessions of Confluence 2013 and combine it with the virtues of Indian culture to prove their worth to the world.”

During the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Aditya Mathur, Head of Pillar and Professor, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore was conferred the Award of Hony Professor at Amity School of Engineering & Technology by Dr. Ashok. K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Group.

Expressing her gratitude to the business leaders and the distinguished guests who made the event possible, Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Acting Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, said “Confluence- 2013 proved to be an apt platform to discuss the requirements and understand the necessity to develop the new technologies for scientific research and design. She expressed her hope that various informative sessions during the Conference would have augmented the knowledge of the participants and students.

Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Prakash, Director, Amity School of Engineering & Technology said “Confluence 2013 witnessed a true confluence of Industry and Academia, providing an excellent learning exposure to students and budding IT professionals and an effective platform for the Industry leaders to trade in the latest trends in Information Technology.

The Valedictory Function of the Confluence was preceded by the ‘Industry Award Ceremony’, wherein Amity Leadership Awards were presented to the top notch Industry professionals from Oracle, CISCO, Tommy Hilfiger, Bajaj Energy, Radisson Blue, Idea Cellular, Snapdeal.com, Vijaya Bank and Aaj Tak

The two day Confluence included technical sessions and paper presentations which were divided on 6 tracks. The Track 1 addressed by Prof. Tapie Rohm, California State University, USA focused on Social Computing. In Track 2, Mr. Saket Modi, CEO, Lucideus and Mr. S D Saxena, PTC, India Foundation discussed the Next Generation Information Technology – Challenges & Future ahead. Prof. W. M. P. van der Aalst, Eindhoven University, Netherland addressed the process mining. Track 4 considered the topic of Social Media where Dr. S. R. Subramanya, Professor, National University, San Diego, CA, USA spoke about the Technical Advancements in Social Media and Mr. Kapil Gupta, CEO, Omlogic and Mr. Kamlesh Kishore Singh, Managing Editor, India Today expatiated about Security and Collaboration and Role of Social Media in shaping mainstream Media respectively. Tracks 5 received an address by Prof. Alferd Vaccaro, University of Sannio, Italy on Security. In the last track of the day, the topic of Mobile Computing was reviewed by Mr. Mohd. Irshad Saifi, General Manager-IT, Ranbaxy, Mr. Jitin Narang, COO, Teachaheadcorp and Mr. Asheesh Kumar, Head of Infrastructure Operations, Orange.

Track-IX included a tutorial on Performance and Mobility Testing – the key to keeping business applications running. Ms. Pooja Sharma, Sr. Consultant, Borland and Mr. Pinkush Mittal, Regional North Manager, Canada were the eminent speakers of this track. Dr. B.K. Sharma, Principal Scientific Officer, NITRA (Ministry of Textile, Government of India) chaired the session on Data Mining and Open Source Platforms.Following was Track-X on Cloud Computing and Ms. Chavi Gupta, Director Sales Consulting Technology, Oracle, Mr. Binay Rath, Exdata Strategic Solutions Oracle and Ms. Renuka Jain, Joint Commissioner, Income Tax Department were amongst the invited speakers.  In Track-XI Prof. (Dr.) S. R. Subramanya, National University, San Diego threw light on Algorithmic Thinking and Problem Solving to Increase Competence of STEM Students, CA and in Track-XII Prof. (Dr.) Ajoy Kumar Ray, Vice-Chancellor, Bengal Science & Engineering University simplified Recent Trends in Image Processing and Applications. Post Lunch, Plenary Session-III commenced with Track-XIII where Industry Academia Collaborations –Issues and Road Ahead was moderated by Mr. Anand S. Khati, Joint Secretary, Government of India, Delhi.

The Confluence was inaugurated on September 26, 2013 by Mr. Rajiv Mehrotra, Founder & Chairman – Shyam Telecom; Mr. Suresh Chandra Sharma, Deputy Director General – Department of Electronics & Telecommunication, Government of India; Mr. P.K Gupta, Senior Director- EMC Corporation Singapore; Prof. D.K. Bandyopadhyay, Vice Chancellor – Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University; Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Acting Vice Chancellor – Amity University and Dr. Ravi Prakash, Director – Amity School of Engineering & Technology.

Prof. (Dr.) Abhay Bansal, Director, DICET & HoD(CSE), Amity School of Engineering and Technology and Coordinator, CONFLUENCE 2013 introduced the gathering to the theme of the CONFLUENCE 2013. Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Prakash, Director, Amity School Engineering and Technology, and Co-Chairperson, CONFLUENCE 2013 formally welcomed all the dignitaries and the participants from the various parts of the country. This was followed by Chairperson’s address by Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla, Acting Vice Chancellor, AUUP. The Proceedings of Confluence 2013 were then officially released. Following that, Shri Suresh Chandra Sharma, Dy. Director General, Department of Telecommunications Ministry of Communications & IT, Govt. of India delivered his address. This was ensued with an address by Chief Guest Mr. Rajiv Mehrotra, Founder and Chairman, Shyam Telecom and VNL and President, MTS. In the Keynote address by Mr. P. K. Gupta, Senior Director and Chief Architect, EMC Corporation, Singapore threw Light on the thrust areas of theme of Confluence 2013. This was followed by address by the Guest of Honor Prof. (Dr.) Dilip K. Bandhyopadhyay, Vice Chancellor, Guru Govind Indraprashtha University. Prof. (Dr.) Ravi Prakash described Amity University as ‘a temple of learning’ and very rightly called it a research and innovation driven University. Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla addressed “the world as a global Village” and boosted the student’s morale with her words of wisdom.  Mr. Rajiv Mehrotra revealed that innovation is good only when it reaches the market and the end customers. Mr. P. K. Gupta spread delight among the crowd by making them do the ‘gangnam style’. He emphasized that Data scientist is the most aspired job of this era. He also explained the 4 V’s of Big Data – Velocity, Value, Variety and Volume.

In the end, Ms. Nitasha Hasteer, Acting HoD, IT, ASET and Coordinator, CONFLUENCE 2013 proposed a vote of thanks to all and acknowledged the invited guests for gracing the occasion by their solemn presence and all the participants who had travelled from different parts of the country for this conference.
