Two Students from Amity International School, Pushp Vihar discover “Asteroid 2013 LS28

Amity International Schools, under the able guidance and leadership of Chairperson Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan, promote and encourage scientific spirit and activity based learning amongst Amitians. Amity International Schools have nurtured numerous prodigies in the area of Sports, Science and Technology, contributing to the development of the Nation.

Following the illustrious examples set by their seniors, Gaurav Pati and Shaurya Chambial of class VII, Amity International School, Pushp Vihar, Delhi have discovered an Asteroid, provisionally named as 2013 LS28.

The discovery has been confirmed by the international scientific community. The efforts of these young students are indeed praiseworthy and reflect the urge for quest, enquiry and “looking beyond” routine that is the very essence of Amity!

Both the students are part of the “Astronomy Club” of the school which is always abuzz with activity and helps member students hone their potential to the fullest.

Talking about the stupendous achievement, Gaurav Pati shared that the journey to discovery started in the month of May when both of them attended IASC’s “Asteroid Search Campaign” for astronomy students along with their Physics teacher. During the Campaign, he stated, “two asteroid specialists apprised us with Asteroids and their enormous size posing a threat to the entire world. We were briefed as to how to download an asteroid searching program called ASTROMETRICA through which meteor can be discovered. Both of us came back home with a fire in our belly to discover an asteroid.”

Further, outlining he said, “It was the eleventh June when I submitted our MPC report file with a total of 62 moving objects, 26 found by Shourya and 36 by me. Eventually our hard work began bearing fruits. Soon, we got a mail saying that one of our asteroids had been considered as a preliminary discovery .After a few days, we received another mail saying that our asteroid is now a provisional one! We are eagerly waiting for it to be placed in the world’s official minor body catalogue maintained by Astronomical Union (Paris)”.

Gaurav Pati has a special fascination for Space since he was 6 years old and is an avid reader of books on Space Science. He has been regularly attending short terms programmes organized by Nehru Planetarium which provide answers to his numerous queries regarding the Space and celestial bodies. He aspires to become a “ Science Fiction Writer” in future.

Shaurya Chambial, another genius, has been exploring and learning about Space since he was 8 years old through books, Discovery Channel and  National Geographic Channel. Drawing inspiration from the Great Scientist Albert Einstein, Shaurya wants to become a Scientist in NASA and discover new Asteroids, new particles like Higgs Boson and contribute to the growth and development of the country through his contributions.
