Dr. AS Khanna, Professor, IIT Bombay delivers lecture on “Development of Smart Coatings Using Nanotechnology” during ASTIF lecture series

Dr. AS Khanna, Professor of Corrosion Science & Engineering - IIT Bombay delivered lecture on “Development of Smart Coatings Using Nanotechnology”.  This was the 83rd lecture organized by Amity Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation under the ASTIF lecture series at Amity University, Sector-125.

Dr.Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President –Amity Group; Dr. (Mrs.) Balvinder Shukla, Acting Vice Chancellor - Amity University, Dr. W. Selvamurthy, President – Amity Science Technology & Innovation Foundation, Dr. Sunil Saran, Sr. Vice Chairman – ASTIF, Dr. Ajit Varma, Advisor – Amity Institute of Microbial Technology were present during the occasion amongst a galaxy of Scientists.

Introducing the themeof his lecture, Dr. AS Khanna said that coating in any surface protects it from pollutants, weather and other corrosives. Coatings are basically binders used like epoxies, Alkydpolyster, Poly Silicane etc. The coatings can be modified by using nano particles like Nano ZincOxide, TitaniumDioxde etc. Coatings with Nano Particles can further be modified into the following:

-         Weather / UV resistance coatings

-          Scratch/ Abrasion / wear resistance coatings

-         Biocidal Coatings

-         Non Skid Coatings.

These Nano particles coating is also known as smart coatings and can be defined as a coating which performs a very specific function very effectively. Smart coatings can be further classified as per their function of self cleaning, self healing, conducting coating, energy management, Anti Bacteria.

Dr. Khanna said that any paint coating is made of resin and hardener and maximum damage in coating is due to mechanical effect or UV blocking. Dr. Khanna also talked about Sol GelCoating which is a method in which desired resin is converted into a sol using a silicone to form a precursor. The properties of this precursor are modified by the addition of hardener which enhances its properties. Dr. Khanna also briefed about the Super Hydrophobicity coating which is ability of surface to make water bead off completely and thereby wash off all contaminations very effectively. It is also called as lotus leaf effect as lotus has a natural wax coating which gives roughness to surface.

Dr. Khanna said that researches are going on various types of smart coatings which can be used into various practical purposes like:

-         Solar Panel Cleaning – Coating applied to high rise and widely spread solar panels for self cleaning

-         Water Leaking – It is a most common andserious problem found in any house hold, office and commercial buildings

-         Fire Retardant coating – Researchers had applied coating into wood which resulted into no damage to surface even after 7 minutes of fire.

Dr.Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President –Amity Group said that it is very rare moment for the students of Amity to interact and gain with the experience of a scientist who is researching on such an important topic of smart coatings using Nanotechnology.

Scientists, faculty from Amity Institute of Microbial Technology, Amity Institute of Applied Sciences, Amity Institute of Nanotechnology and other Amity Institutions were present during the lecture session.
