Students of Amity Schools contribute actively towards societal issues during “Youth Power 2012-13
It was impressive to witness the youth of the country talking so passionately and vociferously about the issues afflicting our society -“Supporting senior citizens”, “Banning plastics”, “Sanitation and hygiene issues”, “Respecting Heritage” and “Food Adulteration” during Grand Finale of “Youth Power 2012-13” at Amity University Campus, Noida.
“Youth Power” was launched in the year 2008 by The Global Times, Youth Newspaper of Amity Group with the mission to sensitize the youth towards social issues. The competition now in its fifth year aims to build a democratic society by nurturing the youth to become competent and engaged global citizens.The Youth Power Programme 2012-13 focussed on mentoring ethically inspired leaders of tomorrow through creative communication. A group of four students selected through interview from each of the eight Amity branches across Delhi and NCR created awareness on different social issues of their choice.
The Finale was graced by the Chief Guest, Ms Richa Anirudh- famous Anchor , Dr. (Mrs) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools, Ms Megha Mamgain, Senior Producer and Anchor, Ms Meenu Vadera, the Founder of Azad Foundation & Sakha Consulting Wings Pvt Ltd, a women on wheels Enterprise, Ms. Poonam Singh Jamwal- CEO, Extramarks.com and Ms Rajshri Sen, Manager, Resource Mobilisation for the NGO –Breakthrough.
The finale saw eight teams from various Amity Schools fighting for the title of Youth Envoy. The team from Amity International School, Noida comprising of Sana Sawhney, Ayan Pandey, Ananya Rajpoot and Ayushi Gupta with their project “Say No to Plastics” won the title of Youth Envoy. The team from Amity School, Sector- 43, Gurgaon with their project “Sanitation and Hygiene” was declared First Runners Up and Amity, Saket with their project “Respect Heritage” bagged Second Runners up title.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools congratulated and commended all the participants for the dedication and hard work they have shown towards various causes and stressed that the youth of today, with their passion and love for the country, will become the torch bearers of tomorrow and will lay the foundation of strong India.
Sharing her views and left speechless by the presentations of the students, Ms Richa Anirudh said, “it’s really heartening to see the youth of today so well connected with the realities and problems faced by the nation and offering concrete solutions to those problems also.” She called upon the youth to work collectively towards making those solutions sustainable and tangible and take forward the causes they have supported during the Contest.
Ms Rajshri Sen, Manager, Resource Mobilisation for the NGO –Breakthrough appreciated Amity for conceptualizing and initiating “Youth Power Contest” for the students and giving them an opportunity to work and contribute to the societal causes, making them responsible citizens of the country.
The finalists shared their experiences and learnings during the Finale through videos, verbal presentations, gimmicks, flash mobs, colorful and expressive dances.
Talking about the project “Say No to Plastics”, Team Leader Sana Sawhney representing the team Amity International School, Noida shared that the entire team is very passionate about environmental issues and they make sure to contribute, in whichever way they can, to environment protection and safety. She outlined how with the dedicated efforts of the team, they were able to convince few restaurants in Noida to switch from plastic to fibre bags.
Team Leader Vansh Saluja from the team of Amity International School, Saket outlined the mammoth efforts the team had to make to ensure “heritage status” for Sultan Garhi, the oldest tomb of India located near Mahipalpur, Delhi. Earlier, the tomb was lying in shambles and did not even figure in tourists’ map and through the sincere efforts and perseverance of the students involved in the team, the Government has planned a detailed renovation of the monument.
Also present during the occasion were Mr. Aseem Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity University Rajasthan, Ms Divya Chauhan, Chairperson, Amity Institute of Fine Arts and Amity School of Fashion Technology, Ms Jaishree Chauhan, Maj. Gen K J Singh, Group Vice Chancellor, Amity University and heads of other Amity institutions.
