Students of Amity Legal Aid Society visit Tihar Jail to provide legal Aid to the undertrials on Plea Bargaining
The students of Amity Legal Aid Society had organized the Tihar jail visit in association with Delhi Legal Services Authority from March 4-6, 2013, with the objective to provide legal Aid to the undertrials on Plea Bargaining. The groups consisted of 20 students each from different semesters on voluntary basis. They were accompanied by a faculty Ms. Manika and office bearers from Legal Aid society.
Plea Bargain is an agreement in a criminal case between the prosecutor and defendant whereby the defendant agrees to plead guilty to a particular charge in return for some concession from the prosecutor. This means that the defendant will plead guilty to a less serious charge, to the original criminal charge in return for a lenient sentence.
A plea bargain also allows both parties to avoid a lengthy criminal trial and allow criminal defendants to avoid the risk of conviction on trial for a more serious charge.
Tihar is the central Jail located in Delhi and is the largegst in south Asia. This jail offers an excellent platform to visit correctional institution in detail. The visit was undertaken to carry on an survey of those undertrials who want to go for plea bargaining. Each visit witnessed a turn out of about 80 to 100 inmates, who were explained about the concept and surveyed for the bargain.
