‘Inter Institution Debate Competition’ held at Amity University


Safa Mohammed Saleem, from Amity Institute of Marine Science and Technology and Jaisal Chauhan, Amity School and Engineering Technology win the ‘Inter Institution Debate Competition’ held at Amity University, Sector 125, Noida. The winners will represent Amity University Uttar Pradesh in “2nd Round of Inter University Debate Competition” on 22-23 September, 2018 at Lucknow organized by All India Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Smriti Samiti, in collaboration with University of Lucknow.

The Inter University Debate Competition is being organized to commemorate the Birth Centenary Year of the Freedom Fighter and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Late Shri Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna.

The Inter Institutional Debate competition witnessed the participation of more than 100 students from various institutes of Amity University, who debated ‘For’ and ‘Against’ the Motion on the topic“In the Opinion of House Social Media is Proving More of a Bane than Boon to the Youth of the Nation”.

Prof. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Cabinet Minister of Women Welfare, Family Welfare,Maternity and Child Welfare and Tourism, Government of Uttar Pradesh, daughter of Late Shri Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna was present during the occasion and awarded the winners.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Rita Bahuguna Joshi apprised that this competition and topic has invoked great interest amongst the youth. She said that communication systems have revolutionized over the years and has made us a close knitted society. But such abundant access to information and easy connection must be balanced. She advised the students to decide on how much use of such platforms is at balanced amount. Prof Joshi emphasized upon the importance of person to person communication which is losing its significance these days. She averred that for a person to be successful, knowledge, commitment and empathy is required. Knowledge which is not only gained through Google and empathy by being connected to the emotions of people through verbal interactions.

Sharing her views, Prof. Rita Bahuguna Joshi opines that everything in life has two aspects and it is necessary to evaluate and understand both which will help the person to move towards coherent direction. She stressed that it is the discrimination of an individual to utilize a platform for society’s advantage or disadvantage.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. (Prof.) Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh said that in early decades, the only way of communication was personal and being renowned was through a person's good work.She emphasized that with changing times, the importance of social media is growing at warp speed, many businesses and individuals have benefited from social media and its impact has been huge.

After the 2nd Round of Inter University Debate Competition, 04 Participants- 02 Each ‘For the Motion’ and ‘Against the Motion’ - will be selected for the 3rd and Final Round scheduled on 23 Sept, 2018 at Lucknow. HRD Minister will give the prizes to the winners - 1st Prize:  Rs. 51,000/-;2nd Prize: Rs. 31,000/-; 3rd Prize: Rs. 21,000/- and Consolation Prize: Rs. 11,000/-
