One Day ‘Criminal Law Conclave: Crimean’
In the recent times, India has witnessed major paradigm shift in various domains of criminal law and has made it essential to foster intellectual curiosity amongst budding legal professionals about the ever-evolving nature of the crime and criminal law. Therefore, to abreast the students about the changing paradigm in criminal law, Amity Law School Noida organized a one day ‘Criminal Law Conclave:Crimean’ at University campus, sector 125, Noida.
The Conclave aimed at providing a unique opportunity to law students from all over the country to exhibit and cultivate their interests in criminal law through participation in various competitions like legal quiz,debate, legislative drafting and essay writing, which were adjudged by doyens of legal profession.
A ‘Panel Discussion’ on the topic ‘Soundness of Indian Criminal Justice System to curb White Collar Crimes” was also organized wherein renowned legal experts,politicians and industrialists including Shri. Navaniti Prasad Singh, Former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court; Advocate Vinay Bharadwaj; Shri Murari Tiwari, Advocate at High Court of Delhi; Shri. Ankush Munjal, Charted Accountant & Advocate Supreme Court of India and Sh. Sidharth Pandey- Chief lead news and investigation, Go News 24*7 deliberated over some of the most important contemporary issues related to the functioning of the criminal justice system in India.
Sharing his views,Mr. Navaniti Prasad Singh, Former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court remarked that law system is inefficient if the system doesn't have the confidence of people to report the crime. He stressed that the need of the houris to establish independent investigating agencies that work within a stipulated time frame and providing adequate investment in the judicial system by hiring more judges to attend the increasing number of cases. He expressed that it is disheartening to see that people want to criminalize and prosecute every wrong act, but slapping a fine on certain crimes can also discourage from committing crimes. He remarked that there are many laws in existence but it is important to monitor the compliance. Mr Singh opines, "irrespective of legislative situation, there will be no change unless public morality or values change"
Mr. Ankush Munjal, Charted Accountant & Advocate Supreme Court of India suggested that besides that legal framework some forensic techniques need to be inculcated the legal education system. He mentioned that with increase in rise of bank frauds, law students must gain knowledge about bank systems and legal parameters associated with it.
Shri. Maninderjeet Singh Bitta, Former Chief of Indian Youth Congress; Shri. Sambhit Patra, National Spokesperson BJP; Shri A. K. Choubey, Minister of State forHealth & Family Welfare, Government of India; Hon'ble Mr. Justice R. K. Agarwal, President of National Consumer Dispute Resolution Forum and Shri.Nirmal Singh, Veer Kunwar Singh Foundation graced the valedictory ceremony andinteracted with the law students.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sambhit Patra, National Spokesperson BJP said that it is the responsibility of the legal fraternity to protect and strengthen the law.He shared that universe and its law are perfect and anything that comes out from the universe will be complete, it may seem imperfect due to the faculty of judgment. He advised the law students to possess the quality of empathy which will help them to make right decisions in their legal profession. Mr. Patra encouraged the students to work towards their interests otherwise they will be trapped in the vicious cycle of life duties.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Maninderjeet Singh Bitta stressed that despite so many years of Independence, India is still facing the looming issues of corruption,religion and caste division etc which needs to be addressed. He stressed upon to strengthen the judicial system by bringing the consensus on the importance of Supreme Court & High Court as the foremost and not the politicians. Mr Bitta lamented the present political situation wherein there are concerns over the well-being of criminals but not the victims and their families.
Prof. (Dr)Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh said that Amity focuses on providing knowledge beyond classrooms and these conclaves help the students to learn through the experiences of such eminent legal professionals. She expressed her hope that the budding legal professionals will fight for the right and bring the due Justice to victims in their course of profession.
During the occasion, the awards were presented to the participants by the delegates. ‘Best Speaker- Against the Motion’ was bagged Kshitij Pasrica from Amity Law School Noida; ‘Best Speaker- For the Motion’was received by Hussain from Jamia Milia Islamia; Best Team in Debate Competition was awarded to team from Symbiosis Law School Noida; The first position winners for the 'Essay Writing competition' were Mr. Varad Dixit and Ms.Nidhi of Government Law College, Mumbai; Mr. Varsh Gulaya and Ms. Aamna Naqui won the first prize for 'Legal Quiz Competition'.
