International Seminar on ‘Best Practices of Inclusion Strategies for Students with Special Needs'
To deliberate upon strategies for fostering inclusion in classroom, Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences in association with Rehabilitation Council of India organized a one day International Seminar on ‘Best Practices ofInclusion Strategies for Students with Special Needs' at Amity University Sector 125 Noida
The International Conference was attended by more than 200 teachers and students across Delhi NCR including Pathways International School, Kothari International School, Ambience School, Holy Heart Special School and Chander Bhushan Memorial School amongst others.
Inaugurating the seminar, Dr. Devender Banda, Professor-Special Education, Texas Tech University, USA said that the need of the hour is to improve the life quality of children with special needs and to make them independent contributing member of society. He emphasized the students with special needs should be involved in every activity conducted in the school as well as at home. They are entitled to choices for basic functioning like the other students. He remarked that students with special needs should not be considered different, only then inclusive teaching is possible. Dr. Banda opined that dependency on parents for every activity restricts the growth of disabled children. He pointed out that using the psychological procedure of classical conditioning will aid to provide environment for stimulating behavior. Dr.Banda emphasized on the power of communication and advised the teachers to create a positive environment for children to help in improving their behavior.
Dr. Nora Griffin Shirley, Professor-Special Education Program, Texas Tech University,USA said that creating inclusive environment for children is a continual process since there are many challenges which are yet to be identified. She shared that many countries are keeping a blind eye towards the needs of disable children and are not providing any training and skills to the teachers required for inclusive teaching. Dr.Nora averred that accepting the disability of the child and commencing the counselling at early stages is breaking the major barrier for better improvement in later stages.
Speaking during the occasion. Dr. Jayanti Pujari, Director, Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences said that there has been progress in terms of inclusive teaching but challenges in rural areas still need to be addressed She stressed on collaborative efforts and emphasized on providing special education training to teachers as per every disability.
