Amity Institute of Telecom Engineering & Management organizes “The Facebook supported Social Surfing Workshop”

As part of Human Value Quarter, Amity Institute of Telecom Engineering & Management (AITEM) organized “The Facebook supported Social Surfing Workshop” at University Campus, Noida.

The aim of the workshop was to spread awareness regarding online safety, optimum use of counter speech and the need for gender sensitive cyber etiquette amongst the youth.

Ms. Arnika Singh Project Officer,Media and Communications, Centre for Social Research; Mr.Vikram Sheoran, Web Manager, Centre for Social Research; Ms. Ranjani Arvind; Social Media Manager,Centre for Social Research and Ms Shruti Moghe Policy Programs Manager - India& South Asia | Facebook conducted the workshop.

Ms. Arnika Singh Project Officer,Media and Communications, Centre for Social Research said that social media platforms play important role in spreading awareness about social issues and concerns. She referred the example of Nirbhaya incident where social media was used to to create mass awakening against the crime. Ms. Singh apprised that there are 4Cs that define Social media namely Creating, Curating,Connecting and Culture. She advised the students on using social media in a conscious way and cautioned that too much of exposure to social media could be risky as content might be interpreted differently by different people depending on who reads them. She averred that usually people don’t read the content but react to it on the basis of reaction from friends or other people. She pointed out that it is important to realize the expression of the content before reacting and also reaction must be in a constructive manner, keeping in view the spiraling effect online content can create.

Mr.Vikram Sheoran, Web Manager,Centre for Social Research briefed about the new security settings in Facebook and mentioned that Facebook has created various security tools to battle the security issues and safeguard the information. Mr. Singh apprised about Login Approval Codes, Safe Log Out from other device and Trusted Contacts as safety settings in Facebook. He emphasized that if an individual is not using safety setting appropriately then the control over one’s information is less.

Addressing the gathering, Col R K Kapoor, HOI, AITEM said that one of the issues under Human Value Quarter is “Digital Awareness”, hence the workshop is organized to solicit the views of students on Internet, its free access, advantages/disadvantages and the importance it holds in their lives. He stressed that the deliberations during the workshop will help in bridging the gap between the virtual world and the communities that will further aid in recommending the best practices for a gender sensitive online experience.

During the workshop, few activities were organized to signify the importance of communication and use of social media for social cause were also emphasized.
