Amity University confers Honorary Professorship upon Prof. (Dr.) Sartaj Sahni, University of Florida, USA
Amity ACM Student Chapter and Departmentof Computer Science & Engineering, Amity School of Engineering &Technology (ASET) organized an expert talk on “Time & Energy Efficient Computing” by Prof. (Dr.) Sartaj Sahni,University of Florida, USA as part of 5th Distinguished Lecture Series at AmityUniversity.
Duringthe occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Sartaj Sahniwas conferred with Honorary Professorshipby Prof. (Dr.) BalvinderShukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh in presence of Prof.(Dr.) Abhay Bansal, Joint Acting Head-ASET;Dr. K M Soni, Deputy Dean – Domain Engineering and Technology and other seniorofficials of Amity.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr. Abhay Bansal said that Amity believes in providing global exposure to every student for his successful career. He averred that Amity School of Engineering and Technology has been ranked amongst top Engineering Institutes of India and has been striving hard to accomplish the vision of Founder President – Dr. Ashok K Chauhan to make India a Knowledge Superpower. Briefing about Amity ACM Student Chapter, Prof. (Dr.) Bansal shared that Amity ACM Student Chapter is the winner of ACM World No1 Student Chapter Excellence Award 2016 and have also already expanded to more than 1750 members.
During his lecture, Prof. (Dr.) Sartaj Sahni briefed that in computing, the performance of applications are measured in terms of time and memory requirements. He mentioned that recently, there has been a growing interest in a third performance metric which is energy. He apprised that considering energy as a metric, we need to focus on two areas which are data centers and big data computations; wherein both time to completion and energy consumption are important metrics. Dr. Sartaj stressed that the data centre energy usage worldwide is 30 BW/hr which is equivalent to 30 nuclear plants andout of which 6% to 12% is used in computing. He further added that energy costs of PCs used in large universities or companies is around $ 2 million per year. If the energy is utilized in constraint then saved amount can be used for other important resources. He averred that energy consumption in IT has become an important metric over the years. The main concern is reducing energy without sacrificing run time. He suggested that reduce overall time and cache misses to save energy consumption in computing.
Prof.(Dr.) Sartaj Sahni expressed his gratitude to Amity for bestowing the honor on him and assured that he will mentor the students with best of his experience and knowledge.
The guest lecture witnessed the participation of more than 200 students and faculty members of Amity School of Engineering and Technology.
