Amity ranked amongst the Top Universities in “QS University Rankings : BRICS 2015”
QS Quacquarelli Symonds (producers of the QS World University Rankings ) today released “QS University Rankings : BRICS 2015 ” inDelhi wherein Amity University Uttar Pradesh has been ranked amongst top 94 Indian Universities and 400 Universities of BRICS countries.
QS University Rankings: BRICS was developed to track the relative progress of leading universities in BRICS countries – all of which have made investments in higher education and research. The Ranking is based on key performance indicators relating to global reputation, internationalization, academic staff levels, and research production and impact.
Welcoming the distinguished gathering, Ms Mandy Mok- CEO, QS Asia Quacquarelli Symonds, Singapore said that Research is the mother of Development inevery country therefore, it is very important for Universities to focus on research. Universities not only nurture students but they have the potential to bolster the economies. She remarked that QS BRICS Rankings indicate the standing of educational institutions globally. She thanked all the partners for making the event possible.
Unveiling “QS University Rankings: BRICS 2015” and sharing exclusive analysis of the rankings, Mr. Ashwin Fernandes- Head of Client Relations, QS Asia Quacquarelli Symonds, Singapore stressed that the number of International students have doubled in last 12 years and the purpose of QS BRICS rankings is to help these prospective students and their parents to make informed choices about the right University and the country for pursuing a particular programme. Highlighting the parameters used to identify world class universities under BRICS Rankings, he stressed that Research, Teaching, Employability and Internationalization are the core aspects of BRICS ranking with 30% weightage given to Academic reputation from global survey, 20% to Employer Reputation, 20% to Faculty Student ratio, 10% Proportion of Staff with PhD., 2.5% to International Faculty, 2.5% to International Students, 5% to Citations per paper from Sciverse Scopus and 10% to Papers per faculty from Sciverse Scopus.
Talking about BRICS 2015 Rankings, he said that in the third Edition of BRICS Rankings, 411 Universities were evaluated out of which 404 have been ranked overall, top 100 have been published and 16 Universities are new entrants. He remarked that Indian Universities have done better than previous year with 15 Indian Universities featuring amongst top 100 and 31 amongst top 200 Universities amongst BRICS economies in year 2015. He stressed that rank imposes responsibility and it takes time to go from good to great.
Presenting the analysis on “QS BRICS Rankings and India”, Dr.Karthick Sridhar- Vice Chairman, Indian Centre for Academic Rankings and Excellence, India said that QS Rankings have been there for over a decade helping students to compare the world’s highest-performing universities in different world regions and in specific subject areas. With so much of information around, students need to have fair, non-commercial, transparent and independent source of information,which is being provided by QS rankings since 2003. He shared that BRIC Srankings help the countries benchmark themselves with similar economies. Dwelling on BRICS rankings 2015, hehighlighted that while all five BRICS countries are represented within the top20, China’s dominance is clear throughout the ranking. Driven by strong performance in the two global reputational surveys of academics and employers,Chinese universities take seven of the top 10 spots and almost half of the top 50. Talking about Indian Universities, he remarked that only 1 Indian Educational Institute features in Top 10, 5 in Top 20, 9 in top 50, 15 in top 100 and 31 in Top 200.
He remarked that lower ranking of IndianUniversities in QS BRICS could be attributed to incomplete data submission anddelayed data submission by most of the Indian Universities. He called uponIndian Universities to continuously engage with QS and pro-actively submitrelevant data, as outlined by QS for BRICS Rankings which will facilitateproper rankings on time.
Addressing the gathering, Dr W Selvamurthy- President, AmityScience, Technology and Innovation Foundation (ASTIF), Amity University thanked QS for extending wholehearted support for improving the quality of Higher Education in India. He stressed that it is a very opportune time in India when under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Higher Education, Learning and Research has been exponentially growing by promoting Public and Private Partnerships. He remarked that Indian Institutes are looking forward to learn the best practices from their counterparts in BRICS economies so that all of them could mutually benefit and move up the rankings.
Sharing her views during the occasion, Dr. (Mrs.) B Shukla- Vice Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh said that Amity University has been participating every year in BRICS Rankings since Amity is very pro-active in bench marking itself with the best of Institutions across the world. She remarked that it is very important to participate in International Rankings to identify where an Institution stands Internationally and how it could improvise by filling up the gaps steadily and continuously.
