Experts of Psychology deliberates views on Role of Psychology in Nurturing Values and Strengths in Individuals and Society during the 3rd International Conference of Psychology & Allied Sciences at Amity University

Amity Institute of Psychology and Allied Sciences in association with Indian Association of Health, Research and Welfare organized its Annual 3rd International Conference of Psychology & Allied Sciences at Amity Campus, Sector125, Noida. The theme of the three day conference was “Nurturing values and Strengths in Individuals and Society: Role of Psychology”.

The International Conference provided a platform to Global Psychologists,Researchers, Academicians and other social scientists to exchange notes and discuss contemporary research on how values can be nurtured at individual and society level for leading a happy and contented life. During the Conference,more than 600 research papers were presented from worldwide.

The Conference was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. Manas K Mandal, Chief Controller,R&D (Life Sciences) DRDO, India; Dr. Janak Pandey, Former Vice Chancellor,Central University of Bihar; Dr. N K Chadha, Professor & Head (Psychology),University of Delhi; Maj Gen (Retd.) Ranjit Singh, Vice Chancellor, Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University, Jind; Dr. Judy Kring, Positive Psychology Coach, USA;Dr. W Selvamurthy, President, Amity Science Technology and Innovation Foundation; Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla, Vice Chancellor, Amity University,Noida; Dr. Upinder Dhar, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academics), Amity University,Noida and Prof. (Dr.) Abha Singh, Director, Amity Institute of Psychology and Allied Sciences.

During the Conference, Souvenir was released in which more than 600 Researchers have presented the paper by the Chief Guest and other distinguished dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Balvinder Shukla said that the topic of the conference is very relevant in the current scenario as values are the foundation of an individual and society but the present generation is running away from values. She further added that there have been an increase in the heinous incidents of violence, abduction, child abuse, rape, murders, terrorism, etc.and these are outcomes of lack of positive values. Dr. Shukla also mentioned that Values are the foundation of becoming good human beings who became assets to the society and nation.

Expressing his views on today’s scenario on Human Values, Chief Guest Dr. Manas K Mandal said that People don’t prefer to talk about values as it brings discrepancy between what we speak and what we preach. Hence, in present time nobody wants to discuss about values. He further added that today’s generation is confused and in crisis of values. He expressed his hope that the conference will awake the youth about realizing the difference between aspirations and values.

The first day of conference began with a Plenary Session chaired by Dr. Janak Pandey discussed on the topic of ‘Indigenous Values, Strengths, Relationships for Peace & Happiness’.

Sharing his thoughts, Dr. Janak Pandey said that Value is one word that we veryfrequently use to explain our conduct and our beliefs. There are variouscourses on Value Education for the Children and Adults which were launched with the idea to inculcate positive values in society, but, no assessment of such courses was conducted to know the impact. He emphasized that values are not biologically inherited and can be learnt from life experiences at social, economical,personal, societal, religious and spiritual levels. There is a need to understand the context of what values we live with and what we preach.Realizing the importance of indigenous values will lead to peace and happiness in oneself and society, he opined.

Relating Values to success, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Group said that Values are the crux of success a person achieves in life. He further added that his achievements are the result of the values and strengths imbibed in his psychology and life. Dr. Chauhan praised the deliberations made by the speakers during the conference.

During the second day of Conference, the Plenary Session chaired by Dr. Waheeda Khan,Professor, Jamia Milia Islamia discussed on the topic ‘Personal & Societal Values for Eradicating Corruption’. The key note speakers on the panel wereDr. Janak Pandey, Dr. Sangeeta Trama, Professor, Punjab University and Dr.Ilan Dar-Nimrod, Asst Professor, University of Sydney.

The third day Plenary Session chaired by Dr. Hajra Hussain, Counselor, AmityUniversity-Dubai shared her views on the topic ‘Values Based Skills& Practices for Ideal Governance: Self & Society’.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Hajra Hussain said that value based skills are the ones that connect us to social activity, social support and social compliance,whereas, value based practices supports individual’s decision making. Courage Imagination, compassion respect responsibility and so forth are the examples of value based practices. She apprised that various decisions of an individual’s life depend on what values they hold, it influences the action. Dr. Hajra added that Values exist in everyone but it depends on the individual to optimize it or not. Self- awareness of values is very important as it will result in positive results.

Delivering the Valedictory address, Prof. (Dr.) Abha Singh, Director, Amity Institute of Psychology and Allied Sciences, presented an overview about conclusions and suggestions drawn from the discussion during the conference. She said that there is a requirement to develop and deliver awareness programmes to prevent the erosion of values from the youth and generations to come. She further suggested that there should be a development of training programmes for students of schools and colleges to spread awareness about importance of values among peer groups, society and nation.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Prof. (Dr.) Rajni Bagga, Head, National Institute of Health and Family Welfare said that youth are the future of our nation and they are the transformers that will bring change in the world.Hence, it is required to prevent erosion of values in them. She further added that every human being has great potential and divinity within them but it is on the individual to realize it and the realization of divinity comes from the values. Dr. Bagga emphasized that Success and Character Building of an individual is determined by the Values he/she posses. She also mentioned that IQ of a human being doesn’t reflect his/her values but an individual should focus on building of Emotional Intelligence to inculcate positive values inoneself.

Sharing the importance of Values in Civil Services, Mr. Rajesh Bhushan (IAS), Joint Secretary, Rural Development of India said that whether it is an individual, organization or group of people of a society, everyone have set beliefs and value system is the way we organize and structure the beliefs.Hence, the structuring leads to formation of moral code of what is right or what is wrong. Advising the future bureaucrats and IAS aspirants on values, Mr.Bhushan said the major value is to realize the responsibility towards the people as our Preamble of Constitution commences with the phrase ‘We the People’, hence, the civil services need to  necessarily govern with the values of being responsible to and sensitive towards the needs and requirements of the people

The event was attended by more than 600 Global Psychologists, Academicians, Researchers,Scholars and other social scientists from worldwide.
