The students of Amity Legal Aid Society had organized the second Visit to Dasna District Jail on 28th February 2013, with their objective to provide legal Aid to the underprivileged and needy. The group consisted of 8 students from different semesters on voluntary basis. They were accompanied by two faculty members Ms. Vijayshree Pandey ,Ms. Sheetal Singh.
Dasna Jail is located on NH 24 and houses around 4260 inmates, all convicts and under-trials. The visit was undertaken as a continuation of the agreement with our Legal Aid cell to work for the undertrials. The objective of the visit is to study the the functioning of the jail, conditions of the inmates and to understand their problems and to provide possible legal service to the inmates. The purpose was to see and learn the practical functioning of judiciary.
Their were some common legal problems which required Legal assistance:
1. Delay of more than a month in appearance before the court.
2. Few inmates did not have their parents informed about them being in jail.
3. Some inmates were not able to afford the bail bond even for petty offences and have to remain in jail.
4. Some of the out station inmates were not able to provide two guarantors to give their bail.
Survey of those undertrials were carried
who have finished more than half of the sentence in jail.It is a new rulling of our law ministry to release the undertrials who have served more than half of the term of the offence for which they are convicted in jail.
Amity Legal Aid Committee proposes to work in tandem with their Legal Cell and work as the medium of communication with the outside world, thus facilitating legal help and speedy justice. The supritendent Jail had agreed for two visits in a month of our students to come and work for the inmates. He has also invited us to witness Lok Adalats that are organised inside the jail.
