Workshop on Lexicographic Competence by Mr. Peter A. Sokolowski, Editor –At-Large, Merriam Webster Dictionary at Amity University

Amity Institute of English and Business Communication organized a workshop on Lexicographic Competence by Mr. Peter A. Sokolowski, Editor At Large, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary to enhance the communication skil1s of the students at Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida campus.

Mr. Peter A. Sokolowski, Editor At Large, Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, shared some extremely valuables knowledge regarding the usage of the dictionary. He elaborately explained the history and the significance of the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary. He gave some general guide lines on the differences of American- British English, common errors in English, usage of Indian, French and other foreign languages in English. He said that the word ‘Prepone’ would be added to the Webster Dictionary. And Indian words Like Curry, pyjama, Himalaya would be added in the dictionary.

He said, “Language is culture and it is embedded in culture. Therefore, we tend to use some words which are repeated and shy away from using new words. We found the whole arc of the story through the usage of vocabulary. In our dictionary we do not prescribe we rather describe.”

Dr. Balvinder Shukla, Pro VC, (Academics), Amity University Uttar Pradesh said that English and Communication Skil1s were taught in all the institutes of the university. So the workshop would prove fruitful to the students. She gave few general connotations regarding the use of good communication skil1s. She said in this regard that languages breaks and makes relationship. Good business relationship can be established with proper communication skil1s. She also said that the use of dictionary is unanimous. It is due to the fact that dictionary is used not only to see the meanings of words but also for its different content usage.

Madhulika Jha, Director, Amity Institute of English and Business Communication while addressing the gathering said that we dedicate the event to ‘Amitasha’ which is working under the able guidance of its Chairperson Dr.(Mrs) Amita Chauhan for the upliftment of the girl child. The workshop was held to commemorate the occasion of Amity Human Values Quarter, 2010. She also advised the students with a quote of Mother Teresa by saying that spread your love wherever you go.

The lecture of Mr. Peter A. Sokolowski was followed by an interactive session with the students.

Later on Inter Amity Institutions debate competition on the topic, “Morality stands out in the contemporary World of Material Surge” was conducted to mark the Amity Human Values Quarter. Aditya Vikram Singh and Aastha Malhotra of Amity School of Engineering and Technology bagged the first prize and Manjari Tiwari and Tamanna of Amity Institute of Education bagged the second prize in the debate competition. The best debater was awarded to Aastha Malhotra of Amity School of Engineering and Technology.
