Students of AITTM visited the home for disabled people, Delhi Cheshire Home

Gandhiji rightly said, “To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer”.

20 students from B.Tech(E&T) along with the faculty members of AITTM went for a visit to Delhi Cheshire Home as a part of Human Values Quarter on 17th March 2011. Cheshire Homes assist people with disabilities by providing the conditions necessary for their physical, mental and spiritual well being. Delhi Cheshire Home has 95 inmates.

The purpose of visit was to help and encourage the inmates there. The faculty members and the students contributed generously to raise money to donate various food items like fruits, sweets, biscuits etc to the institute and also sponsor the lunch for all the inmates. They said that ‘we gave wholeheartedly but what we received was priceless’.

Within a short span of four hours, the inmates of Cheshire Home redefined the word “disability” for them. The students learnt that it is very easy to give up, but to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that is true strength and if you have that in you, the world is yours. Even “disability” has “ability” in it. All one needs is too see things in a positive way and not give up.

Bhagwan Dass, an inmate with keen interest in painting showed his extraordinarily creative work. Another inmate, Mithun proved that he is no less than disco-dancer Mithun Chakraborty by shaking a leg with all the students. Anil, an inmate suffering from Progeria was very happy when the students sang his favourite songs. The students of AITTM played, laughed, shared, sang, danced and enjoyed. Each and every moment spent there was very emotional. The students felt extremely peaceful and happy at heart, but tears welled up in their eyes after witnessing such courage and determination.

The students were amazed to see the beautiful greeting cards, diyas, decorative candles, pen holders, gift tags, folders, idols made by those wonderful people. They truly have enormous potential and talent in them. Students have bought many of their products to keep the memories of this truly motivating and touching experience.
