‘Country needs more legal professionals’ opines Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly, Supreme Court of India while Inaugurating the 10th Amity National Moot Court Competition

To familiarize students with the actual court proceedings and add perfection to their sklls of formulating and presenting legal arguments before the judges, 10th Amity National Moot Court Competition has been organized by Amity Law School, New Delhi at Amity University Campus. This year’s competition is based on the issues relating to “Public International Law”.

The 10th Amity National Moot Court Competition spread over three days (March 11 – 13, 2011) was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok, Addl. Solicitor General of India, Dr. Arun Mohan, Senior Advocate and eminent author and Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Universe.

Delivering his inaugural address and motivating all the 77 participants of the Moot Court Competition Hon’ble Justice Mr. Asok Kumar Ganguly, congratulated Amity Law School, New Delhi, for organizing an intellectually stimulating moot court competition and said “Over the ages the status of ‘Law’ as an academic pursuit has changed by leaps and bounds, in the sense that it is no longer a part time learning option for students. It is heartening to witness the renewed interest in Law studies amongst youngers.” Sharing his views on the kinship between law and governance Justice. Ganguly stated “Law education is a wider concept of governance. Improvement in the standards of legal education will better the governance of the country. India at present is in the era when Law has become global owing to its convergence with international jurisprudence. He further added “The court has widened its jurisdiction to become an institution of governance to give a fillip to the country’s economic development.” Justice Ganguly further said “Law is an applied science that demands sincere practice and to become a good lawyer it is of paramount importance to master the facts with thoroughness, study the legal provisions with carefulness and ensure sound command over conduct as well as the presentation sklls in terms of using appropriate language while placing the legal arguements.” Encouraging the budding lawyers to reap the utmost from such moot courts that give the experience of a practical court room situation, Justice. Ganguly appealed to the budding lawyers to practice the profession of advocacy and said “there is a dearth of efficient legal professionals in the country therefore courts should show more openness in welcoming the youngsters churned out from the distinguished law colleges like Amity Law School and this will be the effective move towards holistic progress of the nation.”

Welcoming the august gathering, Prof. M. K. Balachandran- Director, Amity Law School, New Delhi shared the proud achievements of the students of Amity Law School and said “ Moot courts are of great benefits to the budding lawyers wherein the future legal professionals are thrown up to an actual court room feel and they must utilize such opportunities to the utmost in order to carve a successful future for themselves in the profession of advocacy.”

During the inauguration ceremony Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok, Addl. Solicitor General of India shared his views on ‘how law has metamorphosed from a mere profession of advocacy to an instrument of governance over the years. It is heartening to see that bright young legal professionals are showing interest in the challenging profession of law and this is what will change the justice delivery system for the better.” He urged all the participants to endeavor in becoming good lawyers in a way such that the judges can have complete faith on their authenticity of arguments and said “regardless of a victory or loss in the cases fought the future bar members should put in their best to assist the justice delivery system.”

Talking about the increasing importance of Law in the present times Dr, Arun Mohan stated “ Law has elevated itself to become an instrument of governance and a good legal system causes a rise of about 3% in the annual GDP growth of a country.”

Expressing his gratitude to the distinguished guests for making it to the inauguration ceremony and inspiring the budding lawyers, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Universe said “Moot court is a gateway to success and all the participants of the moot court competition will make successful legal professionals of tomorrow.” He added “the legal acumen of Indian lawyers are unparallel.”

Over 24 law colleges and institutes across India are participating in the competition including NALSAR, Hyderabad, Government Law College, Mumbai, Campus Law Centre, faculty of Law, DU, National Law University Jodhpur, Government Law College, Mumbai , Aligarh Muslim University, ILS Law College, Pune, LLOYD Law College, Greater Noida, Amity Institute of Law, Mohali, Amity Law School, Noida , Department of Law, University of Calcutta, Faculty of Law, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi, SVKM’S Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Chennai, NLIU, Bhopal, University Law College, Bangalore, and GGSIP University. The three day competition will be judged by Hon’ble sitting Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Court, eminent practicing advocates, judicial officers and professors of law.
